In the distant year of 1973, Spanish architect Ricardo Bofill decided to transform an old and long-inactive cement factory. What's intriguing is that he envisioned turning the factory into... a residential home. And thus, the project "La Fábrica" was born.
From Idea to Reality
It's astonishing how Ricardo saw potential in a building that seemed completely useless. The factory, situated in the suburbs of Barcelona and constructed during World War I, was not just closed and abandoned but also partially destroyed by the time restoration work began. Nevertheless, this talented architect saw immense possibilities in the structure and, along with his team, embarked on the project.
The initial phase involved basic repairs to restore the dilapidated elements of the building. This phase took several years, after which Bofill focused on the main task: working on the exterior design of the building and organizing the interior space. After years of effort, he succeeded in creating a truly unique and, most interestingly, functional residential home.
- Each room inside "La Fábrica" serves a distinct purpose, ensuring no two rooms are decorated alike.
- Thanks to ample space both inside and outside, Bofill created numerous relaxation zones on the former factory grounds.
- Workspaces are also crucial, as Ricardo and his team spend a substantial amount of time working directly within "La Fábrica."
- One of the most captivating spaces in the renovated building is the kitchen. Designed in a retro style, it exudes a cozy family atmosphere and provides an excellent space for relaxation and socializing.
- To adorn the exterior of the structure, Bofill opted to integrate nature: the courtyard and building walls are lush with greenery, grass grows on the roofs of individual annexes, and ivy covers the chimney stacks. This creates a remarkable ambiance of antiquity and unity with nature.
A significant symbolic aspect of "La Fábrica" is that renovation work has been ongoing for almost half a century. According to Ricardo, this home reflects his entire life - the evolution of his taste, architectural vision, and attitude towards the functional purpose of housing. This process will continue until the architect himself grows tired of it!
