The Beginning
The longstanding leader of the company is Boris Nuraliev. His journey in the field of computer science began when Boris was a student at the Moscow State University of Economics, Informatics, and Statistics. His natural talent and passion for the field led Nuraliev to start working in the laboratory of automated control systems during his studies. This eventually resulted in a program that extracted information from large databases by reacting to queries input in a specific language.
Later, the program was adapted for personal computers and named 1C. The secret behind its name was the ability to find answers to queries in just under 1 second. This program marked the first success for the future leader of a major company and gained wide popularity. In honor of the program, the entire corporation would later be named.
New Ideas
After analyzing the success of his first program, Boris Nuraliev realized the potential for success in this field. He invested the proceeds from 1C sales into creating a distribution network that worked with the foreign program Lotus 1-2-3, an electronic spreadsheet software, the only worthy competitor to Excel. Despite the high cost of the software package, it found users and opened up a broad market for Boris. He then decided to develop his own product to help accountants, leading to the mysterious development of 1C Accounting software, introduced at the Comtek exhibition in 1992. Can Boris Nuraliev be deemed the sole creator of the company?
The program achieved success, despite being slightly inferior to its counterparts. This was because it offered the flexibility of using an embedded macro language, making 1C adaptable to the specific needs of businesses. Installation and configuration of the software, unusual for entrepreneurs, became an additional source of income. This led to hundreds of programmers finding employment, boosting 1C's profitability. Three hundred copies of the accounting program from 1C flew off the shelves in no time.
Development
A successful business must evolve. Boris Nuraliev expanded 1C's software range by introducing innovative "1C Enterprise" software, adept at automating tasks. The initial versions of the software were created for older operating systems, but 1C Enterprise 7 worked seamlessly with modern Windows. The release of version 7.7 in 1999 replaced all previous iterations of the software, propelling 1C into the top spot in the domestic software market. To support the product, Nuraliev launched a simple yet effective advertising campaign in a popular newspaper listing addresses where the software could be purchased, a method that proved highly successful at the time.
Today, the latest version of 1C in operation is the eighth edition. It features a fundamentally new programming language and is incompatible with previous versions.
Games by 1C
1C continued to expand its product offerings into computer gaming. The first major success in gaming came at an exhibition in Las Vegas, where "IL-2 Sturmovik" was declared superior to Microsoft's "Flight Simulator" and claimed the top spot.
In 2009, a merger between 1C and Soft Club, a game developer, took place. 1C-Sofclub creates new games and distributes Russian versions of software for gaming consoles like PlayStation and Xbox, collaborating with industry giants such as Electronic Arts, Activision, Sega, and Konami.
Currently, 1C stands as the absolute leader in the market of domestic software production and distribution of high-quality foreign products. It's no surprise that the company continues to absorb successful software developers and gaming studios. At present, the number of subsidiary and joint enterprises under the 1C umbrella has reached 200 and shows no signs of slowing down.
