Odessa is a unique hub for startups not only on a Ukrainian but also on a global scale. Three friends, two of whom are from Odessa, launched a startup with unique capabilities called "The Wikipedia of Things" (Thngs.co). The founder, Dmitry Devinn, decided to realize his long-standing idea and create an online platform for showcasing items of cultural value, items with a history attached to their purchase, aiming to preserve their memory.
Initially conceived as a trial version of an aggregator of information about physical objects, the entrepreneurs went a step further and created "The Wikipedia of Things."
What Makes It Profitable?
Despite its apparent user-centric nature and the technical challenge of selling goods or services, Thngs.co is a hidden B2B project. Manufacturers will pay for the placement and description of various products. Moreover, users who showcase their "favorite" things can subtly promote them, describe their features, share their usage experiences. The main idea, as described by Dmitry Devinn, is that obtaining objective information about the things around us is not as easy as it seems. Manufacturers commission paid reviews, enhance their ratings through advertisements, but the average user is far from getting objective information about things.
The developers plan to generate revenue through various channels, with advertising being the primary one. The project is also promising as it seamlessly combines commercial and altruistic elements. Here, one can find museum exhibits to help visitors better understand ancient culture. There is also a plethora of information about items used in the film or gaming industry.
The developers even collaborate closely with the Moscow Design Museum to obtain high-quality materials on original items. As a result, a "collection" of items from the Soviet era has become accessible.
Future Plans
Currently, "The Wikipedia of Things" has gathered over 7,500 items, and thanks to easy access to content contribution, many people are working on expanding the database.
Thngs.co has implemented an interesting mechanism for user-system interaction. Upon registering a new account, you will be prompted to specify your interests, based on which the "Things" system will suggest potentially intriguing objects for you. Additionally, you can add your own items to preserve emotions or memories, and edit existing entries.
The project is evolving, and through participation in international conferences, Dmitry has found experienced mentors willing to invest in expanding the team. Apart from Devinn, the founders of "Things" are Maxim Zuev and Andrey Kuznetsov.
Many find the idea of preserving tangible objects and translating them into the digital space revolutionary, and predict a bright future for the startup. It would be enlightening to read about how today they are already producing GPS footwear.
Share this content with your friends by clicking on the social media buttons, and they will appreciate the intriguing information.
