Finding someone who has never had to rely on the services of a locksmith (whether for a car, safe, intercom, apartment keys, etc.) would likely be challenging. After all, very few people haven't lost such keys, which are easy to make due to their small size. Additionally, they can simply wear out over time or even break (for example, when trying to extract them from a jammed lock). Eventually, a person may need additional copies of their existing keys, and again, they will turn to a locksmith for help. In other words, opening such a locksmith shop as a business in the context mentioned above seems like a very promising idea. Let's discuss its implementation today.
Equipment
First, a few words about the countries producing key-making equipment. The most in-demand options are Chinese, Italian, and domestic equipment of this purpose. Undoubtedly, the Italian equipment will be the most high-quality and durable, albeit with the highest cost. On the other hand, the Chinese option will be the cheapest, but it is quite possible that replacement will be needed after just a year and a half of use. Therefore, the most optimal option for a newbie entrepreneur would be to purchase domestic equipment, which manages to maintain an acceptable balance between price and quality.
Furthermore, key-making machines differ in the types of keys that can be made on each machine. There are four types of these machines: English, door, Finnish, and vertical. It would definitely be better to acquire all four machines right away to reach a wider range of clients. However, there are now combined machines available, incorporating the capabilities of several of the aforementioned types. It will cost around forty thousand dollars. Additionally, about six thousand dollars will be needed to purchase key blanks. And of course, a locksmith will need a set of locksmith tools, a drill, sharpener, and vise, requiring around eight thousand dollars.
Location
The area can be quite small – about four square meters. Renting such a space in a high-traffic area will cost approximately six thousand dollars per month. A mandatory requirement for such a space is the availability of electricity, otherwise, the locksmith will be unable to operate the machines. As for the location, crowded places like markets, train stations, shopping centers, etc., would be an ideal choice.
Staff
For one locksmith shop, one locksmith will be needed. Of course, it would be better if they already have experience working with the machines. But even if they lack such experience, machine manufacturers typically offer training on how to operate them or provide a corresponding video tutorial. The locksmith's salary for making keys can be around eight thousand dollars plus a percentage of sales.
And finally, before starting work, it is advisable to register as a sole proprietorship. Additionally, don't forget about advertising – display a bright sign, place ads in print and online media. In terms of the profitability of such a locksmith shop, with regular orders, it usually becomes profitable within the first six months of operation. Best of luck!
