Searching for fresh and successful business ideas is a creative process that leaves no room for conventional thinking. Nearly all rapidly growing companies started their operations based on unique concepts that were previously unseen in the market. Some companies even prioritize the generation of innovative ideas as the cornerstone of their business, elevating the user experience of everyday items to a whole new level.
You might think that making money from unconventional concepts is quite challenging. However, examples like the YankoDesign blog, where talented industrial designers showcase their work, demonstrate that bold business ideas can bring significant income, both to their creators and those who promote them.
YankoDesign has featured numerous controversial industrial design concepts that may turn out to be unsuccessful or unfeasible in the future. Some of the works on the site include:
- A foot-operated computer mouse resembling a trimmed flip-flop, allowing users to free their hands while using the computer. However, whether manufacturers will be interested in such an innovation and if consumers will adopt it remains a mystery.
- A robot vacuum cleaner running on biofuel—a compelling idea, but its realization is currently impossible as a similar energy generator does not exist yet.
But we wouldn't be discussing this blog if some of these ideas weren't successful. Let’s delve into one of them below.
Diaphragm Adjustable Wrench
Anyone who has ever had to unscrew nuts knows how many wrenches need to be carried for a successful repair. In the past, a craftsman had to carry a huge box with a bunch of spanner wrenches. Later, an adjustable wrench was invented, but it was not suitable for cases where a socket wrench was needed for effective work.
And here it is—the designer Jordan Steranka presented an innovative concept of a universal socket wrench to the world. When you look at his work, the only thought that comes to mind is, “How did no one think of this before?”.
The idea is as simple as it is ingenious—the same principle used in diaphragms of film cameras was implemented to adjust the socket size. Look at the photo—there is a rotating ring on the outer part of the socket wrench head. By turning it clockwise or counterclockwise, you will expand or contract the petals inside the head, precisely adjusting the wrench size to the nut. After that, the wrench locks, and you can use it.
As you can see, this is an incredible breakthrough in tool manufacturing. Instead of a whole set of socket wrenches, all you need is to carry this innovation with you, and you can unscrew nuts of any size.
One can only imagine the excitement that such an innovation will generate among manufacturers and consumers of construction tools. This best illustrates how an unconventional approach allows for the creation of sought-after products and the establishment of a successful business based on its promotion.
