Penguins are fascinating and unique birds. In recent times, they have become incredibly popular. The commercial success of Hollywood projects such as "Madagascar" and "Mr. Popper's Penguins," where penguins were portrayed as cute and clever creatures, has led to an increasing number of people willing to pay significant amounts just to see penguins. As a result, several unique establishments known as "penguinaries" are opening annually. The largest and most interesting one of these projects opened in Detroit, USA.
About the Penguin Conservation Center
The project opened at the Detroit Zoo. The creators aimed not only to showcase penguins to visitors but also to provide ideal living conditions for the animals. The full name of the center is The Polk Penguin Conservation Center.
The Penguin Center turned out to be truly grandiose. The total area of all animal facilities is over 3000 square meters. Inside the complex, there is also a massive 8-meter deep pool holding about 1.5 million liters of water. Currently, The Polk Penguin Conservation Center is home to over 80 penguins of various species, from king to macaroni penguins. Renowned polar ecologist Bill Fraser was consulted to determine the ideal conditions for the animals' well-being. Following his guidance, the company created the perfect microclimate for the birds.
The water temperature in the pools is just 4 degrees, while the air in the enclosures is even cooler at 3 degrees. A modern climate control system not only maintains the optimal temperature for the animals but also generates up to 1 meter of snow daily. Additionally, artificial rocks resembling natural ones were built in the penguinary, along with a machine generating various types of waves.
The center's creators also considered its visitors. Upon entering, you step into a model of a large ship that crashed somewhere off the coast of Antarctica. This effect is successfully created through well-placed visual effects. Visitors can observe the penguins in their enclosures, watch them dive, or walk through two glass tunnels in the underwater gallery to see the animals swimming.
Financial Aspect of the Project
Approximately $30 million was invested in building the penguinary. The center is now open for anyone to visit, with an entrance fee of $14 for adults and $10 for children. Inside, there is a large souvenir shop where various penguin-themed merchandise can be purchased.
What About Here?
In the territory of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS), such unique establishments as penguinaries also exist. They are mainly located on the Black Sea coast and appear quite pitiful. The climatic conditions of this region are unsuitable for them. Moreover, the excessive exploitation of animals for the sake of tourists can have detrimental effects on the birds' health. However, there are genuinely high-quality penguinaries as well. One of them is situated in the city of Novosibirsk. Penguins there live in a large two-story building with a good pool. All necessary conditions have been created for them. This complex is part of the local zoo and is primarily designed for animal protection. The main pride of the Novosibirsk penguinary is the seven Humboldt penguins, a very rare species listed in the International Red Book.
Wouldn’t you want to share this content with friends on social media and find out if they would like to visit a penguinary someday?
