There is a known expression: "Break, not build." And as it turns out, destruction can also be quite profitable. This business idea has gained unprecedented development in Detroit. This is due to the fact that this city is a unique place - a "ghost town" where people still live. The mayor of the former industrial giant can only be sympathized with openly, as the economy under his control is so difficult to manage.
The city's salvation came from young businessmen with "new thinking." Thanks to their business idea, Detroit now has a chance to transform from an analogue of the movie "Silent Hill" into a modern metropolis suitable for living.
The Root of Detroit's Misery
The economic and demographic decline of the city began around 1950. This was caused by the unsuccessful urban development concept, driven by the rapid development of the automotive industry. One of the key factors of decline was lobbying by auto magnates, which led to the destruction of the city's transportation infrastructure and the minimization of pedestrian areas. At the same time, an aggressive advertising campaign was launched to ensure that every family owned at least one car.
All this led to the emergence of an office district in the city center, which gradually became a hotbed of crime, known as "Shanghai." Gradually, the city began to die. Currently, only the outskirts are inhabited, where criminals, drug dealers, and marginalized individuals living on welfare reside.
In an attempt to breathe life into the metropolis, a new trend emerged that absorbs grants and attracts ingenious businessmen, much like the "Help Africa" project. After all, anyone who helps revive this not-yet-dead metropolis will earn worldwide fame and make a decent capital.
One of the main drivers of revival is the "Detroit Utilization Center," which, according to the city's plan, is meant to level the central part of the city. After that, pedestrian and green areas can be rebuilt. The former metropolis will become compact, environmentally friendly, and pleasant for living.
However, an unprecedented amount of work needs to be done - tens of thousands of buildings need to be demolished, first clearing them of drug dens and illegal warehouses. The area designated for demolition work is approximately equal to the size of modern San Francisco.
Only then can social services in the city be established: police, ambulance services, and firefighters can promptly do their jobs. School children will not be afraid to travel to their schools again. The city will once again become comfortable and safe for living.
How the Ambitious Business Idea of Building Demolition Is Implemented
To bring the utilization project to life, the municipality allocated a 37,500-square-foot plot of land. A warehouse complex was built on the site. Construction materials suitable for reuse or sale will be brought here. New buildings will be constructed from these resources, significantly reducing the cost of future construction works.
The utilization work has created new job opportunities and attracted people to the city, something that hadn't happened in a long time. Entrepreneurs with business ideas capable of revitalizing the local economy are also actively involved.
Previously, the city only attracted attention with a variety of art events. For example, a YouTube cinema, a dance school in a bus (organized by 10-year-old Amia Alexander), and other initiatives from art activists. However, attempts to make the dying metropolis "trendy" did not yield significant results.
But now, the revival of the "American Paris" has become quite real. This name, which the city received for its architectural beauty and comfortable living standards, is more than just symbolic.
Building Demolition in Our Realities
What interest can such a business idea represent for domestic companies? Naturally, dreaming of receiving grants for such large-scale work is unrealistic - Detroit is unique in its own way. However, in our country, we have plenty of "ghost towns," dilapidated houses, and entire areas with vacant buildings.
By engaging city authorities in quality and safe demolition that leaves reusable building materials, a company can secure substantial work volume. Additionally, government support can be obtained to improve the quality of life in our cities, just like in Detroit. This would solve the issue of derelict buildings, free up areas for future construction, and reduce the amount of "free housing" for the homeless and marginalized individuals.
It's worth noting that only powerful construction companies with the appropriate resources can handle such activities. But if the demolition business idea appeals to you, it is entirely possible to bring it to life. After all, every successful project once started with just a good idea.
