Every day, numerous talented designers and developers work on creating new inventions. However, only a few manage to create something truly enchanting and functional. One of them is Jay Nelson. His inventions evoke a storm of positive emotions with their appearance while remaining simple and useful.
Personal Journey
Born and raised in sunny San Francisco, the future designer-architect spent his entire life by the ocean. It's no wonder that the theme of surfing seamlessly weaves its way into his works.
Jay cannot be simply defined as just an artist or decorator but rather as an inventor-designer. He handles all functions from sketching to lighting design on his own. Jay became well-known primarily for his works in the style of geodesic domes. Borrowing this idea from his fellow countryman Richard Fuller, he refined it by using natural materials and environmentally friendly energy sources. Nelson's tiny houses, suspended tree structures, and interior designs of cafes and shops are a testament to his imaginative intricacy while remaining functional.
GoldenGate
Yet, Jay Nelson's most popular inventions remain his wheeled vans. The most famous among them, GoldenGate, is named after San Francisco's main landmark. This electric vehicle may appear tiny, but it is cozy and accommodates everything necessary for short travels and daily living.
This device operates on rechargeable batteries and can cover a distance of up to 15 km on a single charge at a speed of 32 km/h. It resembles a small helicopter on wheels and required a significant amount of plywood, epoxy resin, old bicycle parts, and fiberglass to create.
Controlled using a simple wooden steering wheel, which can be connected to your device for use as a mini control panel. Inside, it is equipped with everything needed for quick meal preparation and relaxation. Of course, living or long-distance traveling extensively on such a device may not be practical, but they are perfect for short day trips.
WornWear
Another remarkable creation is the mobile sewing workshop on wheels by the brand Patagonia. For a whole year, the van with a wooden frame traveled across the entire United States, offering free alterations to the brand's clothing. Through this project, along with Jay Nelson, the creators aimed to challenge the consumerism culture and demonstrate the possibility of significantly extending the life of items through simple maintenance.
Always remember to share your new crazy ideas with friends on social media and learn something new every day.
