Most individuals who emigrated from post-Soviet countries to the United States in the 1980s and 1990s and succeeded in their new surroundings were young, energetic, and open to new experiences. The story of Ukrainian artist-architect Viktor Kanevsky is all the more remarkable, as he chose to move at a mature age, already an established professional with years of experience. He wasn't old – he was 40 when he made the move in 1989. Yet, he admits that making significant changes at that stage in life was quite challenging. Now, add in the hurdles of not speaking English and having a meager $300 in his pocket – the picture becomes even more daunting.
