Imagine Furniture Grown from Mushrooms in American Stores!
How would you react to finding furniture made from mushrooms in furniture stores? In the quest to replace plastics, mushroom-based plastic and foam have long been developed, but no one had attempted to create furniture grown in a mycelium until the companies Terreform ONE and Genspace took on the challenge.
Bioengineers have designed and built the eco-friendly Fab Tree Hab Living House. All the furniture in the house is grown from mushrooms. The mycelium is placed in a specially designed mold called Mycoform. This mold is constructed based on a calculated scheme that anticipates the behavior of the mycelium.
The Mycoform composition in the mold includes:
- mycelium;
- gypsum;
- wood chips;
- oat bran;
- other agricultural waste.
All of this is inoculated with Ganoderma Lucidum mushrooms, which in a warm and humid environment bind the contents of the mold into a cohesive and sturdy mass.
Advantages of Mushroom Furniture
Manufacturing mushroom furniture is incredibly advantageous:
- Low production cost. All furniture components are agricultural industry waste, which cost next to nothing. Growing mushroom furniture is easy even in a regular workshop, and energy consumption is kept to a minimum.
- Eco-friendliness. Furniture made from Mycoform material completely decomposes and is entirely harmless to the environment. In fact, if you discard the furniture in a garden, it will become excellent soil fertilizer.
Terreform ONE Company plans to mass-produce eco-furniture. The concept is envisioned to be implemented in developing countries, where customers have limited income, making such furniture accessible to all. Besides furniture, the organic polymer can be used in insulation systems and constructing interior walls.
