Current Food Waste Situation in Developing Countries

According to the United Nations, there is a critical issue with food spoilage worldwide. More than 40% of all food supplies in underdeveloped countries go to waste even before reaching consumers due to a severe lack of electricity in these regions, leading to a complete absence of refrigeration facilities.

The Innovative Evaptainer Refrigerator

To tackle this problem, a student at the Massachusetts University named Quang Truong has developed a refrigerator model that operates without electricity. The invention is based on a technology known to humanity for over 4,000 years. The Evaptainer consists of two compartments stacked together with layers of aluminum radiators and moist fabric. By evaporating, water cools the inner compartment where the food is stored.

This device can decrease the temperature inside by 20 degrees Celsius compared to the surrounding environment, extending the shelf life of food by 2 weeks or more. Additionally, it is quite spacious with a volume of about 60 liters.

Financial Aspect

Designed primarily for less developed countries, the Evaptainer refrigerator comes at an affordable price of approximately $20 in retail. Operating this refrigerator is also resource-efficient, requiring only 6 liters of water to sustain the system for 12 hours.

Currently undergoing field testing in Morocco, the refrigerator is expected to be available for purchase no earlier than 2017. Experts predict that this innovation will be particularly popular in impoverished countries, among enthusiasts of long-term tourism, and individuals pursuing downshifting lifestyles.
