The design and architecture company CODA decided to draw attention to the issues of reusing and recycling everyday items in a very unique way. They created a special installation using ordinary plastic chairs.
Concept
The sculpture is situated on the Art Quad platform near Cornell University in the United States. It consists of 500 chairs typically used for various ceremonies. All chairs are interconnected to form a semi-sphere using ropes and bolts, with each chair's legs facing outward. The art piece is aptly named "Hedgehog" due to its shape, where the protruding legs resemble quills of a hedgehog when viewed from a distance.
It is noteworthy that upon the completion of the project and dismantling of the installation, all chairs will remain intact and be reused for their conventional purposes.
Idea
By creating this innovative performance, the designers aimed to make people reconsider that objects may not always serve the purposes we are accustomed to. As the chairs rise above ground level and stand vertically, they lose their value as seats for human use but gain a "new life" as an art piece.
Ultimately, the creators aim to prompt viewers to contemplate the essence of familiar objects and the possibility of reusing them. In doing so, we can significantly reduce the negative impact on the environment caused by material disposal and preserve the planet's "health."
What are your thoughts on such unconventional installations? Do you consider it art? Share this material with friends on social media and discover their opinions as well.
