The Ice Fairy Tale All Year Round

Near the small village of Jukkasjärvi in northern Sweden, one of the world's most unique hotels, Icehotel, opens its doors annually. Every single detail in the hotel, from the bar counter to the drinking glasses and room walls, is crafted entirely from ice blocks. Previously, such an architectural wonder could only exist in cold weather when the surrounding temperature prevented the building from melting, and there was enough pure ice from the nearby river for construction. But many guests of the region were intrigued by this architectural marvel even in the summer. To ensure they could enjoy the ice hotel year-round, the project Icehotel 365 was conceived.

Project Highlights

The intriguing concept was first introduced to the public in the fall of 2015. Unlike the entire hotel, only a portion of approximately 21,000 square meters will be preserved for the summer. An artificial cooling system will be implemented for the walls and ceilings using photovoltaic panels manufactured by Solkompaniet, the primary financial sponsor of the project.

The solar panels with an area of around 600 square meters are estimated to generate about 75 kW of electricity. This is more than sufficient to lower the temperature of the walls and other components of the complex to -5 degrees Celsius, enabling the building to function seamlessly.

In Icehotel 365, there are plans to include 11 designer luxury suites, each uniquely decorated by renowned designers, as well as 9 standard luxury rooms with saunas and hot tubs. Additionally, an ice art gallery and bar will be created.

In addition to enjoying the rich exhibition north of the Swedish capital, guests can entertain themselves with extreme activities such as dog sledding, observing the Northern Lights, and walks along northern rivers. For those who prefer less extreme accommodations, there will always be the option to stay in regular heated rooms with proper amenities and hot food from restaurants.

In the winter, Icehotel 365 will merge with the standard version of the establishment and become a part of it. The first guests for both versions of the hotel will be welcomed at the end of November this year. The preliminary price for one room will start from 2500 Swedish Krona per night.
