Every car owner sooner or later thinks about finding a good service center to take care of their "beloved" vehicle. What if repairs are needed? With today's fast-paced life, nobody is immune to accidents, scratches, or any other mishaps. That's why it's essential to plan ahead for a reliable service center. If you have the knowledge and appropriate education, you can consider opening your own workshop. In this article, we will discuss how to do it profitably and help people.
Where to Begin?
What do you need to start your own business in this industry? First and foremost, a workshop space. It should be spacious, large, ideally with several rooms. Based on our estimates, at least three rooms are necessary. One room for disassembling cars and conducting preliminary inspections to assess the level of damage.
In the next room, conduct repairs, welding, part fabrication, and surface grinding. Ensure good ventilation, lighting, and heating in the workspace.
Assuming you have found a suitable space that meets all requirements, the next step is to equip the workshop with tools and hire staff.
The service center staff should consist of skilled professionals who excel in their work. They are the best representation of your workshop, and the success of your business depends on their expertise and your craftsmanship.
Ensure your service center is equipped with computer technology and relevant software. Each car brand usually develops specialized software packages for customer service. This software helps in finding necessary parts and developing car diagnostic plans.
The main goal of body repair is to restore the standard geometry of the vehicle. To check the body's geometry, precise measurements of the body parameters are essential, especially focusing on the body's foundation. The car's performance and appearance depend on these characteristics.
Levels of Car Body Damage:
- Level 1 - scratches and dents on body parts
- Level 2 - damage that does not affect the car's performance, but may involve misaligned door openings, deformed middle pillars, and similar issues
- Level 3 - displacement of major car parts
- Level 4 - when all three levels occur and three to four door or window openings are damaged
- Level 5 - fatal damage, rendering the car irreparable
Standard Tools and Equipment for Body Repair:
- Body repair bench, measuring system
- Welding equipment: DC welding machine for working with black and colored metals and stainless steel, AC welding machine for electrode welding, plasma cutting device, spot welding clamps
- Equipment for repairing hidden cavities
- Set of hydraulic tools
Tools required for securing the car: door fixtures, chains, stands, door mounting trolleys, pullers, clamps, extensions.
General-purpose equipment - mobile racks, bench vise, workbench, hydraulic jack, garage crane, mechanic tools, trolley.
Pneumatic tool set: air hammer, pneumatic shears, air gun, grinding and cutting tools, pneumatic saws, pneumatic drill.
Body Restoration Schemes:
- Classic repair method (involves fixing four points of the car—the sills. The car is then pulled back into its original shape. The main drawback is the disruption to other body points, requiring constant parameter adjustments and monitoring)
- Template repair method (involves attaching the car body to a template using special adapters. Each adapter is fixed to the frame, allowing gradual and precise pulling of specific sections of the body without altering the overall geometry. This technique is more accurate and faster to execute and monitor).
