In recent years, in almost any city, one can find a household goods store, and not just one. However, new residential quarters and areas are constantly being developed, requiring the opening of new retail outlets. If you become the first and secure the best location, you can attract loyal customers who, despite the emergence of other similar stores with a larger assortment, will continue to shop with you.
Of course, you can try to reduce the markup on goods, thereby offering lower prices than competitors, but you will be operating at a loss and might even create enemies in the process. Therefore, it is crucial to choose the right, economically viable location for your future retail outlet. A major advantage of this business is that the financial investment required for its opening will be relatively small, and you will be able to recoup it quite soon.
Choosing the Location
As mentioned earlier, the location for opening a store is a crucial element that will determine the future of your business. In this case, when selecting a location, focus on residential areas with a high population density that have been recently developed.
It is important not only to choose a suitable neighborhood for your store but also to time its opening correctly. If you open before all the housing is occupied, few people will visit your store, leading to its premature closure. However, if you delay too much, by the time all apartments are filled, similar stores will be plentiful, and in this business, it is crucial to be the first as someone else will take the best location, leaving you without the anticipated profits.
Therefore, it is essential to seize the right moment, hitting the golden middle ground when there are enough potential customers but competitors have not yet taken over the new area. Avoid opening a household goods store in close proximity to large supermarkets that have specialized departments for household chemicals, home goods, etc., as their prices will likely be lower than what you can offer.
It is also wise to steer clear of chain stores that sell similar products. Even if there are no competitors nearby at the start of your business, there is no guarantee that they won't appear in the future. So, chances are you will need to make some changes to your store, whether it's expanding, updating the assortment, or even relocating.
The space for the intended retail outlet can be quite simple as there are no specific requirements. The main focus should be on at least some cosmetic repairs and ideally having extra space for storage, but if not available, you can display additional stock in the store beyond the showcases.
One crucial aspect of this business is determining the format of your store, whether it will be a self-service store or if sales will be conducted from a counter. Based on the experience of other enterprises, the self-service format is considered more profitable, albeit with its downsides. Firstly, the operational costs of maintaining such a store will be significantly higher due to the need for purchasing special retail equipment and expanding the workforce. Apart from a couple of sales consultants, you will also need a cashier.
Secondly, the risk of theft on the premises significantly increases with a self-service scheme, necessitating measures to prevent theft. Therefore, preemptive measures for security should be well thought out. Despite these drawbacks of the self-service model, it is still better to opt for it as sales volume can be up to 50% higher compared to counter sales.
Assortment Selection
The assortment of a household goods store can encompass a wide variety of products, including several main categories such as building materials, home goods, gardening supplies, and tools. Often, household chemicals, kitchenware, and tableware are also present, with all these household items being neither too expensive nor cheap knock-offs. Damaging your store's reputation with low-quality products would discourage repeat customers.
When forming the assortment, take into account not only the location of the retail outlet but also the variety of products offered by nearby competitors. For example, if the store is in a residential area without land plots, gardening equipment will not be in demand. Instead, building and finishing materials will be more relevant. If there is a nearby store specializing in household chemicals, you should exclude such products from your shelves.
Ideally, a household goods store should have at least 1000 items in stock per 100 square meters of retail space. It is advisable to choose inexpensive items that people use in their daily lives, as there is potential for higher markups. Additionally, prominently displaying as many items as possible in the showcases and on counters is crucial. The more products potential customers see, the higher the chances of increasing sales.
Expenses and Profits
To open a store with a total area of 100 square meters, half of which will be used for service areas, you will need around $20,000. This estimate assumes leasing the space and having just two salespersons on staff. In this scenario, you can earn approximately $1,000 monthly if the total monthly profit is $8,000. With further business development, all investments can be recouped within around one and a half years.
Many novice entrepreneurs believe that a household goods store does not require that much space, and 100 square meters will be too large. However, as practical experience shows, this business relies on high turnover, hence opening a smaller store for household goods and chemicals is not advisable.
Therefore, the smaller the store's area and the amount of inventory, the less money you need to open and maintain it. However, this fact will also significantly impact sales and, consequently, revenue. Fortunately, this business is not seasonal, as there is a wide range of household items, ensuring that even if gardening or construction materials are slow in winter, there will always be a demand for holiday decorations and souvenirs.
