The Thrifty British Art Historian Who Built a $250 Home

For many of us, housing is a significant concern. Buying, building, or renovating can all be costly endeavors, and the mere mention of a mortgage can cause some people to feel dizzy. However, former British teacher and art historian Michael Buck demonstrated through his own experience that people tend to complicate everything, and the true cost of housing doesn't have to be exorbitant. This fact is exemplified by the home he built with his own hands, with an estimated construction cost of around $250.

Building on a Budget

Of course, there are some caveats to his story. Firstly, Michael built the house on his own land, so there were no expenses related to purchasing the property. Secondly, the structure is classified as a summer cottage, resulting in lower construction permit costs and no property taxes. Thirdly, the house does not have electricity or plumbing, so its comfort level can be considered quite minimal.

Simplicity and Functionality

Nevertheless, the house performs its main functions well: protecting people from the elements and retaining warmth inside. It is heated by a wood-burning stove, and amenities are located outside the main structure.

Innovative Use of Materials

Michael made a point of using only readily available materials in his construction. For instance, the floor is made from planks salvaged from an old, broken boat; window glass was sourced from irreparable cars, and the roof is crafted from harvested straw.

Dedication and Creativity

Michael approached his project meticulously. It took him two years to design and gather materials. The end result is a cozy and charming museum-like cottage, which could easily be showcased to tourists as an attraction. While the primary goal was accomplished, Buck also proved that building a home does not necessitate massive financial investments.
