he Story of Digital Ocean: A Journey of Innovation and Success
It's hard to imagine a world where every programmer and developer hasn't heard of the Digital Ocean project by the Uretsky brothers – Ben and Moisey. This massive cloud infrastructure provider now boasts data centers across numerous countries in North America, Europe, and Asia. But what lies behind this tech giant, and what was the idea that sparked its creation?
The Beginning of a Vision
he Uretsky brothers' project idea emerged back in 2003 when web hosting was rapidly evolving, and they were already offering provider services themselves. With big players like Microsoft, Amazon, and Google dominating the market, venturing into something new in this sphere was no easy task.
The brothers recognized the potential in creating a cloud infrastructure, an area already explored by numerous providers. However, they believed existing services were lacking, overloaded, and inconvenient. This led to the idea of creating a product primarily for themselves first, before considering its market demand. With their extensive experience in the field, their vision was not extraordinary but driven by a desire for improvement.
hey approached the project meticulously, assembling a diverse team of five individuals, including networking (Ben), backend (Jeff Carr), frontend (Moisey), Rails (Alec Cartman), and even marketing (Mitch Weiner). This initial team was sufficient for a start, although as the project grew rapidly, it expanded significantly over time.
They decided to develop the project from scratch, deeming it impractical to base it on existing platforms like CloudStack or OpenStack. Adapting those platforms would have required significant effort without guaranteeing satisfactory results.
The Path to Success
nitially, progress was slow due to the high technical complexity of the product, making it challenging for many to comprehend its purpose and audience. The first clients were attracted only after participating in a significant exhibition where a portion of the audience possessed technical expertise. Digital Ocean gained fifty initial clients from that exhibition.
Securing investors proved equally challenging due to the dominating presence of Amazon AWS. Despite misconceptions, they persevered and continued their work diligently.
Upon its launch in January 2011, the project experienced a remarkable shift. While registering only a few new users daily during development, the numbers spiked to hundreds post-launch. The unexpected success prompted rapid company registration, recruitment for support roles, and additional server equipment purchases. The expansion was rapid and ongoing.
Internal Operations
he swift company expansion naturally influenced its future operations. Despite developing a base product prototype, a small team of developers could not anticipate all the challenges that would arise. Digital Ocean faced internal architecture issues, leading to a decision to revamp the system and rewrite the code in Go in 2013. The switch to Go aligned perfectly with the company's structure, with servers already spread across different countries.
Remarkably, Digital Ocean continues to rely mainly on in-house tools, with minimal external instrument usage. Planning, management, and account operations are all handled internally.
Finally, a word about their hardware – Digital Ocean predominantly utilizes Dell and SuperMicro equipment. Besides their reliability, these companies' global presence ensures smooth hardware procurement regardless of a server's location.
