he Story of Shutterstock: A Billionaire's Journey in the World of Stock Photography

Today, the name Shutterstock is well-known not only to professional photographers but also to photography enthusiasts and, of course, customers. It is the largest stock photo agency in the world, allowing photographers and designers to sell their work, while enabling buyers to find suitable images and graphics.

The founder, John Oringer, can boast of at least one unique achievement: he became the first billionaire of the New York Silicon Alley. It's important to note that John has never worked a day as an employee in his life. Everything he has accomplished, he did so independently and by working for himself.

t all began in his school years, where John earned pocket money by playing guitar to his peers and later by teaching them music. This was quite a lucrative venture considering he was just 15 at the time. However, John aspired for more and ventured into repairing computer equipment, a more profitable endeavor.

His journey continued with studies at two universities, earning a master's degree in computer science and a bachelor's degree in mathematics. As a student, John supported himself by selling software he had personally developed.

The Early Days

While developing one of his programs, John faced the challenge of needing to purchase certain photos for promotional purposes. Unable to find affordable options, he had the idea to create a platform where individuals could upload their work, set prices, and purchase images. He kickstarted the platform by taking a hundred thousand photos himself, discarding two-thirds and uploading the remaining 30,000 to Shutterstock. He also advertised his platform on other websites.

ohn devoted himself entirely to this project, which grew rapidly. He chose not to move to the Silicon Valley as he believed he had absolute independence and decision-making freedom where he was. John valued being able to fully finance his project from his own pocket, unlike if he had investors.

John's approach stemmed from some unsuccessful projects he had prior to Shutterstock. Despite failures, he promptly recognized when to pivot, closing unsuccessful projects and focusing on new ventures. Having full control over his decisions was crucial.

s Shutterstock expanded and required additional staff, John preferred hiring developers and engineers over photographers. He believed that in this business, the speed and convenience of finding images for buyers were more critical than the photo quality.

Success in Numbers

hutterstock's database now exceeds 40 million photos, videos, and illustrations. The demand is high due to the rapid growth of website and online media design. The platform has provided work for nearly 50,000 photographers, with average monthly earnings exceeding $4,000. Many professionals even earn tens of thousands of dollars.

ver the years, Shutterstock has paid freelance photographers nearly $200 million. The company's profit increases annually, along with the value of its shares.

Presently, Shutterstock's total assets are valued at $1 billion, with John owning 55% of its shares. What led to such impressive results?

John Oringer's Recipe for Becoming a Billionaire

ohn's lifestyle reflects modesty and even asceticism. Despite his wealth, he lives in a simple two-bedroom apartment and refrains from luxuries. His daily routine and work ethic remained unchanged even after his income soared. He finds pleasure in his work, making it seem effortless. However, he indulges in occasional hobbies like helicopter rides and fashionable events, but still stands out among fellow billionaires for his unique interests.
