The concept of creating electric vehicles is not novel. However, the oil and gas crisis, high fuel costs, and environmental issues necessitate a timely global solution to the problem of internal combustion engines. Just about 5 years ago, early electric vehicle prototypes were met with skepticism. Today, it has grown into a booming industry with fantastic growth rates.
How to Make Money with Electric Vehicles?
The global community is moving in two directions to reduce the number of vehicles with internal combustion engines:
- Creating next-generation electric vehicles with greater speed, power, and easy charging;
- Converting traditional vehicles to electric power units.
Essentially, the body part for an electric motor can be any. The power unit is compact and easily fits under the hood of a car. Moreover, many parts can be effortlessly removed, reducing the vehicle's overall weight.
Benefits of Converting a Car to Electric:
- Attention! The cost of traveling 100 km does not exceed $0.5-1. This is fantastic, especially for drivers spending over $20 on a similar trip for fuel;
- Charging can be done at home, eliminating the need to visit gas stations;
- High reliability, with only three modular working units in an electric vehicle - controller, battery, electric motor - instead of 10,000 working parts;
- Low emissions into the atmosphere, crucial in countries introducing additional taxes proportional to emissions;
- Quiet operation - the car runs silently, only the wheels’ friction against the asphalt can be heard;
- Instant acceleration - an electric vehicle's power unit can accelerate the vehicle to 100 km/h in just 3 seconds (faster than a Ferrari).
Drawbacks also Exist:
- Range on a single charge does not exceed 200-300 km;
- Long charging times - up to 6 hours for a full charge at 220V, and 2-3 hours at 380V;
- Not all models are suitable for conversion;
- Low service and support levels;
- Official registration of the vehicle is nearly impossible.
What Needs to be Removed and Installed?
Specialized auto services are emerging today that allow for converting traditional vehicles into electric ones. Official Tesla and Nissan dealers also offer service.
Items to Remove:
- Cooling system;
- Engine;
- Exhaust system;
- Turbines (if present).
Items to Install:
- Power unit;
- Charging device;
- Lithium batteries;
- Controllers.
As you can see, the main body of the car remains untouched, reducing the client's costs for conversion.
It's worth noting that complete Chinese electric vehicles start from $3,000. Conversion, however, will be more expensive and is generally divided into three categories: Light, Basic, and Premium.
- Light – weaker electric motor, batteries last only 50-70 km, lower max speed;
- Basic – range of 200-250 km per charge, max speed over 150 km/h, regenerative braking, fast charging, specialized Android controllers with GPS;
- Premium – max speed over 220 km/h, 0-100 km acceleration in 3 seconds, range over 300 km per charge, AWD, wide choice of electronics.
Average Conversion Cost for Clients:
- Light – from $5,000 depending on requirements;
- Basic – from $15,000 depending on the car model and complexity;
- Premium – from $50,000.
Considering the market growth, the number of interested clients is increasing. Using an existing car as a base, clients can achieve a $1 per 100 km expense with small investments, which is very profitable for many.
Expenses
Although the conversion cost is tens of thousands of dollars, profits from services make up no more than 10%, with the remaining 90% being the cost of components. Securing direct supplies or dealership agreements for electric vehicle equipment can yield an additional 15-20% income. Profitability varies for different vehicles, with heavy metal-bodied cars being more expensive to convert. Lightweight cars weighing under 800 kg, however, quickly pay off.
Nuances
Ukrainian and Russian legislation does not recognize the term "electric vehicle," complicating conversion processes. Vehicles like go-karts and golf carts are not for public road use, obviating the need for registration. Driving an unregistered vehicle is illegal and can result in fines or vehicle confiscation. What are the solutions?
Possible Solutions:
- Ignore technical details and drive as if it's a normal vehicle - however, keen inspectors or law enforcement may identify the conversion during inspection;
- Officially register the homemade mechanism through institutions providing safety certification; or
- Purchase a ready-made vehicle with necessary documentation.
If you plan to open a workshop for converting vehicles to electric drive, start with logistics optimization. The installation of components is relatively simple, requiring skilled mechanics, attention to detail, and following instructions. Legal matters can be tricky; unresolved issues may destabilize your business.
An additional income source could be an electric vehicle service or selling electric motors and components. Converting one vehicle with an experienced team typically takes no more than 3 days, and your profits depend on a consistent flow of new clients. Advertising, marketing campaigns, and websites are key tools for business expansion.
While converting a conventional car into an electric one may be challenging in current circumstances, switching to wood fuel is a simpler endeavor :)
