The Innovative Furniture Design from Estonia
As the saying goes, a talented person is talented in everything! This expression certainly characterizes the famous sculptor from Estonia who has amazed modern society with his designer furniture and other interior objects. Today, there is an endless variety of imagination-stirring decor elements, but in his creations, Mati Karmine managed to exceed all expectations.
His innovative idea was to use deep-sea mines, discarded in the Baltic Sea after the collapse of the Soviet Union, as the material for manufacturing these items. In the Soviet era, a military base was located near the Estonian island of Naissaar, where for many years after its closure, these mines continued to be discovered and deactivated. It wasn't until 1991 that around 3,000 shells were disassembled by detonating the explosives inside, leaving the mine casings scattered along the shore, forming a whole "graveyard."
Initially, the Estonian government decided to send this pile of "trash" for scrap metal, potentially earning approximately 1 million euros. However, the creative utilization proposed by Mati Karmine proved to be more profitable for the authorities. The revenue from selling one item made from such a mine amounts to around 3,000 euros.
For his furniture production, the designer uses the casings of deep-sea shells, which are processed beforehand. The range of interior items made from sea mine casings is quite broad, including beds, armchairs, tables, cabinets, fireplaces, chandeliers, bathtubs, toilets, and even baby strollers.
Today, the works of this master are not mere individual exhibits but a whole collection of genuine art pieces. However, it is worth noting that such furniture might not be suitable everywhere. For instance, it is better not to use it at home or in an office due to its too rugged appearance, and moving it to a different location can be quite challenging.
Yet, in an establishment styled as a "bunker," for example, these peculiar elements can be confidently applied. They look extraordinary while being sturdy and reliable, hence durable.
