The Masterminds Behind the Project

Two students hailing from Europe came up with a clever and cost-effective method to make tram rails safer for bicycle wheels. Roderick Bridges and Ward Quilters are currently focused on advancing their project. With the prize money from the Hague Innovator, they are dedicating their efforts to researching and enhancing their invention.

When a bicycle wheel gets caught in tram rails, it often leads to falls, injuries, sometimes severe, and damage to the bicycle itself. Given that in Europe, the average family owns two bicycles, the issue of tram rails is very pertinent.

How the System Works

The concept of the Safe Rails mechanism revolves around preventing bicycle wheels from entering tram rails, thus averting unpleasant consequences.

According to their plan, a specially designed movable insert will be utilized in the rail gap. This insert, made of elastic material, will prevent the bicycle wheel from entering the "treacherous groove" of the rail. When a tram passes, it will smoothly shift the insert aside, allowing unobstructed movement.
