A unique and profitable business was created by chance, involving the transformation of sneakers into pollution masks. Van Zhijun, a Chinese designer, came up with this idea not to make money but to express his concern about the poor environmental situation in his country.
The Story Behind Pollution Masks Made from Sneakers
Van, a runner who participates in half marathons, noticed the deteriorating air quality in Beijing during his evening runs. This prompted him to take action. He bought a pair of sneakers and transformed them into stylish pollution masks.
Creation and Sales
Van did not stop at just one mask; he continued making pollution protection gear from footwear using specific filters purchased locally. It takes the designer five days to turn a pair of sneakers into a mask due to the meticulous effort he puts in, resulting in a beautiful and stylish product that makes the wearer look great.
Van not only made these masks for himself but also for his fellow citizens, selling his creations on eBay. Prices for one of these masks reached up to five thousand dollars.
Creator of Sneaker Pollution Masks' Popularity
This designer gained substantial popularity, receiving offers from sportswear companies. They provide him with free pairs of shoes to make masks from, which he can sell for profit while also earning money from the company for advertising. Currently, Van collaborates with the globally renowned brand Adidas.
