Tesla's Solar Roof

Tesla is diving headfirst into developing home energy technologies. A key driving force behind this move is the potential merger with the largest solar panel installer in the United States, SolarCity.

Elon Musk himself recently unveiled the first development in this sector. The solar roof, according to its creators, represents a completely new approach to powering homes. It only slightly lags behind traditional solar panels in performance, while sporting a sleek, modern look.

Product Features

The "solar roof" will be available in 4 different variations: slate, Tuscan, textured, or matte finishes based on solar panels. All of them are made of special quartz glass. Musk claims that this coating is several times more durable than the home itself.

Currently, the product's efficiency is around 98% of the potential of traditional solar panels. However, Tesla, in partnership with SolarCity, is actively working to increase these figures. As for the cost of the product, it remains unknown for now. Nonetheless, developers assure that it will not exceed the price of conventional roof covering options and electricity costs.

The first test model of the "solar roof" is set to be launched as early as next summer. It will then be introduced for broad sale in 1 or 2 variants with a gradual expansion of the lineup.

In addition to the roof, Musk also introduced the new Tesla Powerwall 2.0 model. The battery can now store up to 14 kilowatt-hours of power (compared to the previous generation's 6.4 kilowatt-hours). The price of the new model has also increased from $3,500 to $5,500.
