Almost every owner of a private estate has encountered the issue of stump removal at least once. Often, trees need to be removed due to construction interference or being in a hazardous condition. In garden enterprises, removing old unproductive trees can reach industrial scales. However, what remains after tree removal are stumps, causing more problems the older the trees were. Stumps have a powerful root system beneath, making it challenging to uproot stubborn trees. Leaving a stump unremoved is not an option – nothing can be built on top of it, and planting a young tree next to it is impossible. Moreover, it can sprout shoots, leading to unwanted young tree growth in a few years.
Various specialized equipment has been devised that allows complex operations to be carried out with ease. For instance, there is a technology that enables transplanting mature trees. Similarly, a technology has been developed for stump removal, allowing the elimination of stumps in a matter of minutes. Based on this technology, a highly successful business idea can be built. To understand the demand for such technology, it's worthwhile to first look at how stumps were traditionally removed until recently.
Traditional Stump Removal Methods
The issue of stump removal has always been crucial – without addressing it, reclaiming new arable lands from forests and areas for construction was impossible. Throughout history, several technologies have been developed for removing stubborn tree remnants:
Old-Fashioned Method
In the past, stumps were removed using manual labor and tools. The stump needed to be dug around, all roots severed, and then pulled out of the ground. For old mighty trees with a strong root system, this process could take days. Additionally, it would leave a large hole that needed to be filled properly.
Specialized Equipment
In the modern world, stumps are often uprooted using specialized machinery like bulldozers or excavators. However, this method is effective mostly for small or decayed stumps. Stumps from powerful trees may not yield to this equipment, risking damage to the surrounding area.
Chainsaws
Some owners simply cut the top part of the stump using chainsaws. However, a significant portion of the root system remains in the ground, making this method suitable only if no construction is planned over the former stump.
Chemical Method
In this method, holes are drilled in the stump, encircled, and thoroughly treated with sodium or potassium nitrate. The stump is tightly covered with polyethylene and left for approximately a year. It is then ignited – the wood impregnated with chemicals burns completely along with the entire root system. This method has two drawbacks: it requires a significant amount of time for the entire process and poses a risk of underground fires if peat bogs are located beneath the ground.
It seems foolish to spend so much time and effort on removing a stump in an era where even concrete can be dismantled without waste and quickly thanks to a demolition robot. A technology has indeed emerged recently that allows for quick and precise dismantling of any stump.
Rotary Stump Removal
It appears that the first inventor of this stump removal system was inspired by a dental drill used by dentists to drill our ailing teeth. The principle of removal is straightforward – a special rotor bores into the stump, grinding it to its core. This method offers numerous advantages:
- Accuracy – the removal is pinpoint, leaving a hole in the ground after the stump is dealt with, proportionate to the stump's diameter. Filling it is easier compared to a traditional excavation.
- Speed – a stump can be removed in about 10-15 minutes, the fastest method yet.
- Easy waste disposal – the removal leaves a pile of small wood chips, much easier to burn or dispose of than a massive intact stump.
While this method has minor drawbacks – the roots remain untouched, and not everyone can afford such specialized equipment, the latter drawback can be leveraged as a business idea. If you have a business renting out specialized equipment, you can offer stump removal services to clients.
One of the most gratifying aspects of this business is that rotary stump removers are attachments that can be mounted on tractors. There are numerous models of stump removers available on the market that are compatible with most modern tractor models. Therefore, having your fleet of specialized equipment allows you to easily select a stump remover for one of your machines.
However, relying solely on stump removal as the sole service in your business is not advisable. Stump issues do not arise frequently, making it challenging to secure a steady stream of orders. But if it's one of the many services your company offers, you can earn a decent additional income. When seeking clients, target not only private homeowners but also construction companies, horticultural enterprises, forestry management firms, municipal landscaping entities, and more. This diversified approach will increase the frequency of orders significantly. For example, when working on restoring a garden with old trees, you could secure a contract to remove several hundred stumps at once. Therefore, with a well-organized targeted marketing campaign, you can build an efficient business.
If you found this article helpful, feel free to share it with your friends – it might help them start their own business or find a way to quickly remove stumps from their land.
