nvironmental pollution has become a global issue for humanity. Each year, millions of tons of trash are dumped into the air, land, and water. However, cleaning up the planet from all this waste is a very energy-intensive and therefore costly process. Luckily, science is constantly evolving, and engineers are putting in a lot of effort to simplify this task.
Water Wheel Trash Inceptor
ohn Kellet and Daniel Chase, engineers from Baltimore, Maryland, along with their team, have developed the Water Wheel Trash Inceptor, a water wheel designed to clean rivers of debris. Its uniqueness lies in harnessing the power of water and sunlight. The machine is equipped with thirty solar panels that harness sunlight, converting it into 2500 watts of electricity per day. This power is enough to collect over 20 tons of trash.
How the Mill Works
he design of this miraculous machine is quite simple. Two intake booms capture the trash and feed it to the wheel, which then pushes it to a conveyor belt leading to a trash bin. When the bin is full, it is detached and transported to a waste processing plant by a special boat. There, the trash is incinerated, and the energy produced is used in industries.
Furthermore, this floating cleaner serves another useful function: through the rotation of the wheel, it oxygenates the water, creating favorable conditions for fish. The wheel also removes organic residues that saturate the water with ammonia, which can harm living organisms.
Currently, the Water Wheel Trash Inceptor operates on the Jones Falls river, which is heavily polluted with waste. However, tests have been successful, and mass production and cleaning of numerous rivers and lakes are planned in the near future.
