Format
In a regular zoo, some animals can only be viewed from afar. In a mini zoo, you can even touch them. Owners sometimes organize real fun activities, like competitions to see who can feed geese or piglets faster.
While you won't find exotic animals like cheetahs, iguanas, hippos, or ostriches here, you can feast your eyes on household pets - adorable piglets, bustling chickens, majestic swans, pompous turkeys, cute rabbits, and other critters that delight children.
Sometimes separate areas are designated for cages with foxes, wolves, monkeys, and parrots, as well as aquariums with marine life. If the mini zoo includes a few exotic species alongside domestic animals, the opportunity to take photos with them can be highly appealing, for an additional fee, of course.
Sources of Revenue
The main sources include:
- Entrance ticket fees;
- Personalized guided tours;
- Souvenir, feed, and animal sales.
Rabbits are ideal pets for generating additional income as they breed quickly, and require minimal care. Selling ostrich eggs, sheep wool, and swan down can also be sources of extra profit.
Expense Items
It is most profitable to place a mini zoo within city limits, preferably in a city park to attract more visitors. Therefore, the first and largest expense item is the cost of renting the space.
The next step involves setting up the area based on the animals' needs. Maintaining enclosures, cages, feeders, obtaining veterinary certificates, vaccinations - all of these require additional expenses. And, of course, personnel costs should not be overlooked.
Attracting Visitors
No business can thrive without advertising. However, even widespread city-wide ads and radio/TV commercials do not guarantee a hundred percent result. Some form of attraction is needed. For example, organizing contests and competitions for kids, offering workshops, positioning the mini zoo as a local attraction. To achieve the latter, it would be beneficial to collaborate with tourist agencies and event management companies.
Alternatively, the mini zoo can stand out by being unique and unconventional. For instance, featuring only dwarf breeds of animals. This is sure to attract an additional influx of visitors.
