2014 was a very productive year in various fields of science and technology. Here are some of the most significant scientific discoveries and events that occurred that year.
Anthropology: Uncontacted Tribes in the Jungles of the Amazon
On Earth, there are still many places where no human foot has stepped. For example, in the jungles of the Amazon, there are tribes of indigenous people who have never had contact with "outsiders." These are known as "uncontacted" tribes. Many of them have deliberately avoided meeting with civilized people. Finding such a tribe is an incredible stroke of luck for scientists. In 2014, fortune smiled upon them. It is not always easy to gain the trust of the indigenous people, get them to make contact, and allow strangers into their world, but now the tribes were forced to reach out to the authorities.
The tribe living on the border of Peru and Brazil requested protection from illegal loggers who were cutting down the jungles in their living areas. For the indigenous people, it is not only dangerous due to the destruction of their habitat but also because of the potential spread of various infections to which they have no immunity, risking their lives.
Milestone in Space Exploration
A significant, almost epoch-making event in the history of space exploration occurred on November 12, 2014. A spacecraft landed on the surface of a comet remotely controlled from Earth. The spacecraft was launched in 2004.
During this time, it traveled millions of kilometers through the Solar System and sent back a wealth of information from the comet's surface to Earth.
Creation of a New Chromosome
In 2014, scientists from the New York Medical Center achieved a remarkable feat - they created a new chromosome that functions independently in yeast. Geneticists worked on this project for seven years.
Hundreds of students from different countries participated in this research. As a result of their work, the yeast with the newly created chromosome became more resilient to various environmental stressors.
Scientific Proof of Telepathy
Scientists have long debated the possibility of transmitting thoughts between individuals at a distance, known as telepathy. A group of scientists developed a technology that allows people in different countries, even continents apart, to transmit information without words, solely through mental processes.
Hope for Recovery
In 2014, scientists provided hope for millions of people confined to wheelchairs. They declared that disability is not a life sentence, and even with severe spinal cord injuries, there is still a chance that a person can regain the ability to walk.
Swiss scientists conducted experiments on rats. Initially, they severed the rats' spinal cords and then taught them to walk again. Biologists implanted flexible electrodes into the rats' spinal cords, adapted the electrical impulse to the rodent's nervous system, and subsequently, the rats not only ran but also overcame various obstacles. The scientists plan to begin human experiments in 2015.
