The greenhouse effect remains a major global threat to our planet. Therefore, reducing carbon emissions continues to be a key task for all nature advocates and individuals who care about the environment. An architect from the United States has devised a new way to slightly reduce carbon emissions. His innovative method of brick production eliminates the need for firing, making the process more environmentally friendly.
How It Works
The bricks are made from ordinary sand. A special organic solution with bacteria is used as a binding material. Microorganisms accelerate the production of calcite, causing the sand to harden and transform into a fully-formed brick. This process occurs rapidly, with a complete brick ready in just seven days.
In terms of physical properties, the final product closely resembles regular sandstone. However, it matches traditional bricks in density and durability without the need for firing.
Project Benefits
1) Reduction of Carbon Emissions: Each year, over 130 billion bricks are produced, releasing more than 800 tons of carbon into the atmosphere. By using this simple organic solution, all these negative consequences can be avoided.
2) Economic Advantages: By utilizing this organic bonding method, the use of electricity and essential minerals required for furnace operation can be reduced. Consequently, the cost of brick production decreases, leading to significant savings in construction costs.
