First Income
The duo utilized the unused attic space in their home as a guest retreat. The room was simple yet comfortable, featuring three air mattresses. They advertised their loft on their website just in time for a major conference in San Francisco, where hotel accommodations were scarce. Guests paid $80 each for their first night's stay.
Startup Development
To attract more visitors and increase revenue, Chesky and Gebbia partnered with their classmate Nathan Blecharczyk. Together, they founded a company named Airbed & Breakfast, offering rooms in high demand. They expanded by allowing individuals to rent out their spaces and those in need of lodging, especially during events. Their innovative online payment system charged 6-12% to landlords and 6% to renters, based on the transaction value.
First Million
In the same year, the U.S. presidential campaign kicked off. Chesky and Gebbia seized the opportunity by selling cereal boxes featuring presidential candidates as a complimentary breakfast item. The product was a hit, selling each box for $40 and providing a substantial income. Their hustle paid off when they caught the attention of Y Combinator's Paul Graham, who invested $20,000 into their venture, propelling it to new heights as Airbnb.
Despite initial investor hesitations due to the small team running Airbnb, the founders' hands-on approach, including visiting hosts' homes and taking quality photos for listings, impressed many. By 2009, the company had generated a profit of $7 million from 700,000 rental operations. Today, Airbnb boasts a global team of around two thousand photographers, ensuring listings are verified for quality and honesty.
The website's booking frequency reached every two seconds in 2012, operating in 192 countries. If you haven't experienced Airbnb yet, consider sharing this incredible service with your friends.
