Every experienced driver knows that losing control of a vehicle is much easier after a heavy rain than during icy conditions. Often, the abundance of water on the road makes it slippery at a moment when the driver least expects it. And if the car starts to skid, instinctively wrong decisions are made that lead to accidents. Moreover, puddles on the road or in parking lots cause other unpleasant situations: splattered cars, deteriorating road surfaces, soaked footwear for unsuspecting passengers, and more.
Dealing with these issues, LafargeTarmac, a company specializing in road surface development, has come up with a solution where the surface can "drink" the water poured onto it. Let's explore this business idea further.
What is "water-absorbing asphalt"?
LafargeTarmac is no stranger to developing innovative road surfaces. In collaboration with CarbonTrust, they previously created a "cold" asphalt production technology that can save millions of dollars in the road construction industry.
Now the company has tackled the issue of puddles on asphalt surfaces. The solution they've developed is quite impressive - in a promotional video, 4000 liters of water are poured from a tanker onto the innovative asphalt surface in just 60 seconds, and all the water is completely absorbed! Naturally, even heavy downpours pose no threat to such a road surface.
This new asphalt is made of porous concrete, a material long used in the construction industry. The top layer of the innovative road surface consists of large aggregate asphalt that easily allows water to pass through. Beneath it lies a drainage layer responsible for water management. This road surface provides the necessary level of reliability and can withstand temperature fluctuations from -40 to +40 degrees Celsius.
However, currently, this road surface requires some refinement, as driving on it at high speeds generates a fairly high level of noise due to the large grain size of the top layer. Nonetheless, "water-absorbing asphalt" is already successfully used in parking lots and roads with speed limits. Considering LafargeTarmac's previous successful developments, it's highly likely that they will create a similar surface for high-speed highways as well.
As you can see, here's another compelling example of how by identifying a common everyday problem, a successful business idea can be built. By approaching the world from a perspective of problem identification and finding unconventional solutions, numerous unconventional business ideas can be created, capable of changing the face of our world.
