It's widely known how much animosity exists between car drivers and cyclists. The root of the conflict lies in the absolute vulnerability of these two types of road users towards each other. Cyclists fear motorists because they often end up under the wheels of cars. Car drivers don't appreciate bicycles on the road because they are hard to notice, easy to injure or kill, with all the ensuing consequences.
This issue becomes particularly crucial in the dark hours of the day when cyclists emerge in the light of headlights, almost as if from the ground…
Ensuring the safety of cyclists is usually achieved only through simple reflectors attached to the bike or clothing. However, the effectiveness of such measures is still limited – drivers often notice the figure on the bike too late.
The emergence of crowdfunding platforms on the internet has shifted the situation, allowing numerous enthusiasts developing unconventional projects to realize their ideas. Surprisingly, there are many cyclists worldwide who have come up with innovative and highly effective ways to ensure their safety on the road. These developments have proven to be so successful that each of them has become the foundation for a promising business.
Studying these unconventional ideas will help you understand how to build your own business by solving the pressing issues of a large target audience.
Effective tools for ensuring cycling safety:
Let's start by discussing the innovations in order of their significance regarding safety. You will see how familiar items can transform and protect our comfort and safety.
1. Blaze Laserlight.
This gadget was created thanks to an English woman who is passionate about cycling. The idea is quite simple – a laser is integrated into the front light of the bike, operating like a pointer. The device projects a bright image of a bike onto the asphalt, which moves a few meters ahead of the cyclist. This warning signal alerts the driver about the approaching cyclist several seconds before they come into view. On dark roads, such a device can save lives. The idea was so well-received by bike owners worldwide that the project has already received pre-orders totaling over a million British pounds.
2. Invisible Fluorescent Paint.
This innovation was developed not by startups but by the Swedish conglomerate Volvo. Apparently, the company was inspired by enthusiasts' developments and decided to contribute to protecting cyclists' lives. In this case, the inventors decided to maximize the application of reflective surfaces. Within Volvo's walls, they formulated a spray invisible in daylight but glowing under car headlights. This substance can be applied to bikes, clothing, backpacks, etc., turning the wearer into a continuous reflector. It's impossible not to notice such a figure on the road. This novelty even received the name "LifePaint," accurately reflecting the benefit it can provide on dark roads. Currently, this paint can only be purchased at a few London stores, but likely online sales will be available soon.
3. Turn Signal Glove.
This idea was developed by Zach Vurhiz – an avid cyclist and talented entrepreneur. The concept is incredibly successful – stylish cycling gloves not only protect the hands from injuries but also serve as full-fledged turn indicators. The gloves are made of a combination of leather and spandex, featuring a stylish design. However, the main highlight is the illuminated turn indicator located on the back of the hand. LED lights are used in the gloves to provide a light signal, activated by a button on the index finger base so that it can be pressed by the thumb, eliminating the need to take hands off the handlebars. This device serves as both a front and rear turn signal. In the former case, there's no need to take hands off the handlebars – vehicles in front will easily see the lights on your hands.
Zach was inspired to create these gloves by a childhood event – his neighbor was hit by a car while skateboarding home at night and lost an arm as a result. Deeply affected, he decided to do everything possible to protect the lives of people using skates, bikes, skateboards, etc. The "Kickstarter" site helped bring this project to life, and now you can pre-order "Zackees" gloves for $75, with shipping available even in our country.
4. Innovative Motion Indicator.
This latest invention is simply ingenious. Featured on the "YankoDesign" blog, renowned for its presentations of various industrial design innovations, this gadget maximizes a cyclist's visibility for drivers. The futuristic compact projector was created by designer Elnur Babayev. The device is attached under the seat to an extended rod, positioned behind the cyclist. It projects images onto the cyclist's back, alerting other road users about your upcoming actions: turns, stops, starting movement, etc. During nighttime, a warning sign with a bicycle image can be projected onto your back to ensure visibility to drivers from afar. Since the projector can be attached to any bike model, it can be expected to achieve tremendous success.
Addressing the pressing issues of a large target audience can lead to a successful business venture and benefit a significant number of people. By applying a similar approach when developing your business idea, you can achieve success.
