Today, aquariums are not only acquired as a hobby but also for interior decoration with this unique design element. A well-maintained aquarium can beautifully accentuate ordinary living spaces, restaurants, or offices. However, to fully reveal its hypnotic and enchanting beauty, the aquarium needs more than just plants and corals – it requires living, colorful inhabitants, namely aquarium fish. Let's delve into how to build a business around these wonderful creatures.
Setting Up the Business
To begin, you will need to purchase three to four aquariums of varying capacities since different fish species require different water volumes. One of the aquariums can be a small one (20-30 liters) for fry. They need separate "housing" because if kept with parents and other adult fish, there is a high chance that the fry will be eaten. Specialized firms that manufacture aquariums, easily found online, can assist with selecting aquariums of different sizes. Next is acquiring the fish themselves. Initially, you can start with about 20 pairs of the most common species in your area by researching demand on city websites and aquarium enthusiasts' forums. Overall, aquarium fish can be divided into two groups: low-maintenance (also the most affordable, such as angelfish, which require minimal care) and high-maintenance (more expensive species like cichlids, often needing specific conditions for breeding such as water temperature or lighting). Of course, creating additional conditions for exotic finned pets may require purchasing special equipment, but the profits from their sale will be significantly higher.
Trading aquarium fish can be organized in two ways. The first involves breeding and selling fry, which is the easiest and quickest method for profitability. The second method entails breeding and multiplying adult fish of various species for subsequent sale. Expanding the business can be done by increasing the variety of fish and potentially opening a store selling aquarium equipment and livestock.
Anticipated Expenses
The average price of a 200-liter aquarium ranges around $50. Fish food costs approximately $1 per pack. All standard aquarium accessories (such as plants, oxygen tubing, rocks, lighting, etc.) will amount to $50-$70. Therefore, each aquarium will require $100-$120. As for the fry, prices will vary depending on the fish breed and the seller, so it is advisable to carefully review available offers. Fortunately, there are plenty of options online. Interestingly, besides traditional sales methods, you can also sell bred fish through the internet. Simply create your website with a contact form, listing the available breeds and featuring your own photos of the fish. Good luck!
