In the previous part of our article, we discussed the basic aspects of opening a movie theater and the possibilities of choosing its future format. Today, we would like to delve more into investment planning and its main directions.
Detailing the Expenses: Premises and Equipment
Overall, to set up a medium-sized movie theater, you would need a space of at least 3-4 thousand square meters (considering that most movie theaters now offer various other entertainment besides film screenings, so the space needs to be allocated not just for cinema halls).
Following established standards, for a movie theater to function successfully, it should have at least two food points. One of them will exclusively offer popcorn to viewers, while the other will serve as a full-fledged cafe or restaurant with a wide range of dishes and beverages. In this case, you have several options: 1) set up everything independently under the guidance of an experienced restaurateur, 2) sign a contract with a company that will handle the promotion of your food points from scratch, or 3) lease a portion of the space to a well-known cafe chain and focus entirely on equipping the cinema halls.
As for the cinematic aspect, be prepared to allocate most of your funds to seating equipment for viewers, purchasing projectors, sound isolation devices, and other necessary professional equipment. If you are not ready to invest a large sum in purchasing all the equipment at the start of the business, there is an alternative to rent it. However, this option is not very cost-effective as it may lead to outdated and subpar quality equipment, resulting in additional expenses for repairs and upgrades. The same applies to the premises: it is better to buy the land outright rather than rent an already established space. If purchasing the property is not feasible for certain reasons, it is advisable to sign a long-term lease contract guaranteeing you the use of the building for at least 15 years.
Discussing the setup of your own movie theater in more detail, outfitting an average-sized hall for 300-400 people would cost no less than $100,000. This includes the cost of seating and installing a DolbyDigital film playback system.
If you intend to equip a larger hall capable of accommodating approximately 600-700 viewers, you will need to significantly increase the expenses for its setup (not just increasing the number of seats but also improving the quality of equipment, like enhancing the projector lamp's power).
VIP Hall: Necessity or Luxury?
Currently, VIP services have become a new trendy trend in the service industry, and a network of movie theaters is no exception: in many popular entertainment centers, there are specially equipped VIP halls designed for an audience with above-average financial status. On one hand, setting up such a hall will be more costly as it will require higher standards for furniture and furnishings (increased comfort and stylish, unconventional design). On the other hand, such a cinema hall will accommodate fewer guests, which to some extent reduces your expenses. Regardless, if you plan to create a separate cinema hall for a niche target audience, conduct market research to determine if it will be in demand among future visitors.
In the next part of the article, we will explore the remaining aspects of running this business.
