The embroidered shirt has always been a source of pride and a symbol of the Ukrainian people. Today, not much has changed in that respect. Well-known figures from the entertainment industry, politics, and sports can often be seen strolling in outfits with national attributes, not only at social gatherings but also just on the streets. This type of promotion has had a positive impact on contemporary Ukrainian culture and its mass appeal. Nowadays, it's common to see individuals wearing embroidered shirts, whereas just a few years ago, it was a novelty. It has now evolved beyond being just a themed costume that you could wear to a masquerade ball, a school performance, or a party. It's more than clothing—it's a fashion trend.

The Origins of Embroidery

The art of Ukrainian embroidery dates back to pre-Christian times, meaning it has been around for hundreds of years. This is evidenced by numerous archaeological findings and traveler accounts. The practice of embroidery began in the era of primitive civilization when the first stitch was made, essential for tailoring garments from animal skins. Ancient embroideries that have survived to this day were crafted between the 6th and 5th centuries BC.

Since ancient times, materials such as animal tendons, linen, hemp, cotton, and silk threads have been used. To give clothing a more luxurious look, various precious stones, pearls, beads, shells, coins, and the like were incorporated. Over time, the art of embroidery evolved and improved, acquiring a new character. Passing down from generation to generation, the Ukrainian people managed to preserve the most typical and fitting patterns, which later reflected in national traditions.

What Is an Embroidered Shirt?

An embroidered shirt is a shirt featuring embroidery that serves as the national attire of the Ukrainian people. Traditionally, it was made from homespun fabric. In terms of mass production, this technology has significantly evolved, but there are craftsmen who still create embroidered shirts by hand. The embroidery pattern reflects the uniqueness of Ukrainian culture. Embroidery was not only present on men's and women's shirts but also on outerwear and headgear.

From mother to daughter, passing through generations, themes of patterns, structures, and color schemes were handed down. Modern embroidered shirts with traditional motifs are highly popular, both in Ukraine and beyond its borders.

The Process of Making a Modern Embroidered Shirt and Its Cost

To sew a modern shirt, you will need approximately 1.8 meters of linen fabric, which costs around 20-30 hryvnias domestically, 60 hryvnias in Belarus, and 90-100 hryvnias for Italian fabric per running meter. For a high-quality embroidered shirt, you will need about 80 meters of mouline (cotton threads for embroidery), equivalent to 10 skeins. If you opt for domestic threads, one skein will cost 2-3 hryvnias, while French or German threads will cost 5-6 hryvnias. Experienced embroiderers charge around 100 hryvnias/day, while beginners charge about 50 hryvnias. A simple embroidery piece can take up to three days to complete.

Then, you will need a seamstress, whom you can find through ads, preferably online. The cost of this work is around 150 hryvnias and up. Therefore, the minimum cost for the simplest embroidered shirt would be 350 hryvnias.

You can significantly reduce production costs if you are skilled at embroidery, tailoring, and sewing. However, creating a truly unique item, especially if you are not a professional in this field, is practically impossible. Such work requires five craftsmen—one for selecting threads and fabric, the second for designing the ornament, the third for embroidering it, the fourth for cutting everything to preserve the pattern, and only then the seamstress takes over. Following this process will increase the product's cost, but it can be sold at a higher price (thousands for two).

Another way to reduce the cost of a shirt is to engage a workshop specializing in garment tailoring and embroidery. While this is not handcrafted work, which is always valued, it would cost around 100 hryvnias compared to the 350 hryvnias in the first option. The customer would only need to provide patterns, fabric, threads, and embroidery designs. Production of a batch of 100 items would take 1-2 weeks.

If you are low on startup capital, you could opt to purchase ready-made embroidered shirts from Chinese manufacturers. Although they are made from synthetic fabric, they can be acquired for as low as 40 hryvnias each, with a minimum order of 2000 hryvnias.

Selling Embroidered Items

Many successful entrepreneurs in this business segment not only open specialized stores but also actively engage in online sales by creating e-commerce platforms. The key to success in this idea lies in offering a variety of products at different price points and selecting knowledgeable salespeople familiar with Ukrainian traditions and culture.

Regarding the profitability of this business, some experts mention a potential 100% profit margin, which heavily depends on the initial investments. In addition to embroidered shirts, other wardrobe items and towels, both ordinary and wedding, could be added. Setting up a custom embroidered shirt service tailored to specific body types can lead to increased earnings. Consequently, you could earn significantly more from such personalized services.

Primary Consumer Base

Recently, people from various parts of the world have been traveling more frequently and showing genuine interest in the culture and national traditions of the countries they visit. Hence, they are willing to spend generously on souvenirs for their friends and loved ones. These individuals are among the major consumers of niche products like embroidered shirts.

However, it's not just foreigners to rely on; Ukrainians themselves enjoy walking in them on city streets, attending themed parties and festivals, or using embroidered clothing for corporate purposes. We all remember school events where national costumes are required. Therefore, there should be no shortage of customers.

With each passing year, the demand for such products continues to grow, and the interest in engaging in this business does not diminish. Therefore, it is essential to make a stylish statement about your brand—such as running promotions right after opening the store, organizing prize giveaways for customers. This method may not be groundbreaking, but it always works because people love gifts, even if they are not very expensive. Proper advertising strategies like distributing flyers with the store's address and logo, participating in international exhibitions and festivals can also help elevate your brand.
