Can you get rich by selling people things that can easily be found under your feet? As American entrepreneur Gary Dahl proved - absolutely! He built his business selling ordinary rocks and made over $15 million from it.
Success Story
It happened back in 1975. Sales manager Gary Dahl was talking to his friends and listening to their constant complaints about their pets. The never-ending mess, illnesses, the need for regular care, and so on, irritated all his cat and dog owner acquaintances. It was at that moment that Gary came up with the idea of creating the "perfect pet" that would cause no trouble. And that's how the Pet Rock was born.
Secret of Success
Initially, the idea seemed crazy to everyone. But thanks to Gary's sales skills and the factors listed below, it became extremely profitable:
1) Smart Positioning. Gary Dahl suggested selling not just a rock but a "perfect pet" that wouldn't smell, demand attention, or die over time. This approach turned an ordinary rock into an intriguing product for busy people.
2) Unique Packaging. The Pet Rock was sold in a beautiful souvenir box resembling a dog carrier. It came with an instruction manual for taming.
3) Successful Marketing. The new product immediately made appearances on several popular TV shows of that time. During the existence of the Pet Rock, over 85% of all U.S. printed publications wrote about it. This media frenzy significantly boosted demand among buyers.
Financial Aspect
The cost of producing one rock was only 95 cents. However, they were sold for $3.95 retail. This means a net profit of $3 per unit. In the five years of the company's existence, they managed to sell over 5 million rocks. Thus, this seemingly simple business brought its founder over $15 million in profits. And that was in the 1970s. Today, this amount would have increased to $57 million.
This story is a great example of how even the craziest business idea can be successful with smart positioning and an active marketing campaign.
