The Hjertefølger family embarked on a truly extraordinary experiment. Four years ago, the family of six, consisting of parents and four children, made a bold move to settle in a completely autonomous home located beyond the Arctic Circle. By embracing modern bioarchitecture methods, they not only adapted but thrived in their new environment, fully self-sustaining.

How It Works?

Their dwelling is situated on Sandhornøya Island, characterized by extreme climatic conditions and an extended polar night lasting around three months.

The key to survival in such harsh conditions lies in a specially constructed geodesic dome from Solardome. Installation took just three weeks. This dome serves to shield the home from snow and frigid Arctic winds. The exterior glass and aluminum shell aid in retaining warmth, fostering favorable indoor climates. Additionally, the dome incorporates solar panels, supplying the family with all their electrical needs.

The house itself spans 200 square meters, crafted entirely from organic materials like sand and clay. The microclimate created by the dome bolsters the home's durability and simplifies maintenance.

Homestead

Furthermore, the property boasts an 80 square meter vegetable garden and a 100 square meter orchard. With abundant fruits and vegetables harvested over five sunny months per year, the yield easily sustains the family of six all year round. Their garden now blooms with apples, plums, apricots, kiwis, grapes, while the vegetable patch thrives with tomatoes, zucchinis, cucumbers, beans, etc. Through organic composting, the family enriches their produce annually, securing a nutritious diet at minimal expense.

Share this fascinating story on social media and see if your friends are up for the challenge of living in such a self-sufficient home.
