More than half a million people work for the company Samsung worldwide today. This brand is the pride of South Korea, its economic miracle.
The Beginning - A Trading Firm
What comes to mind when you hear the name "Samsung"? Most likely, you envision "smart" home appliances. However, initially, under the Samsung banner, the founder of this trading brand, Korean Byung Chul Lee, dealt with rice and fish (including supplying products to China). The name of the modest trading firm, opened in 1938, translates to "three stars" - apparently related to the three sons of the entrepreneur.
The range of products of Samsung Trading Company gradually expanded, adding production of vodka and beer to its trading activities - Byung Chul Lee opened his own factories.
Trials of Samsung
But after World War II, the Korean businessman faced bankruptcy - in 1950, due to the military confrontation between North and South Korea, he lost almost all his property. Surprisingly, just a year later, the resilient Byung Chul Lee was back on top - he not only owned his own sugar plant but also a textile factory and an insurance company.
Fateful Partnership
In the 60s and 70s of the 20th century, Samsung not only successfully diversified its product range and activities but also entered the international market. The collaboration with Sanyo, a company specializing in electronics, was significant for the South Korean brand and laid the foundation for the emergence of the corporation's flagship - Samsung Electronics.
Initially, under this brand, televisions were produced (initially black and white, then color). Later, Samsung's own washing machines and refrigerators were introduced.
Global Expansion
Samsung established its own branches in the United States, England, Canada, and Australia. Today, South Korean products confidently conquer the market, increase their trading volume, which amounts to billions of dollars, receive prestigious business awards as one of the world's best companies, actively acquire shares of foreign manufacturing companies (including AST Co).
Owner of factories, newspapers, steamboats. Now Samsung is a huge corporation, comprising units specializing in manufacturing home appliances, mobile phones, semiconductor devices, producing marine vessels and aircraft, as well as providing various financial services.
The company is currently led by Byung Chul Lee's youngest son - Lee Kun Hee, who is no less commercially gifted than his father. Many attribute the successful development of Samsung to the close friendly ties of the company's founder with South Korean government circles. However, in the 1980s, due to an economic crisis, the company's support was terminated. Thanks to Lee Kun Hee's skillful reforms, the corporation not only maintained its positions but also increased its value - today, Samsung is among the hundred most valuable brands in the world.
