Many business ideas may initially seem unconvincing and unable to generate significant capital. However, any business idea can serve as the foundation for creating a successful large company. A prime example is the company "Star," which has been operating in the production and sale of miniature models for over a quarter of a century. At the outset, it was difficult to imagine that manufacturing miniature plastic soldiers could form the basis for establishing a large international company.

So, let's begin...

Success Story of the Company “Star”

The company was founded by the talented businessman Konstantin Krivenko. Since childhood, he was passionate about military technology, and this passion became the cornerstone of his business success.

The beginning of the future market leader in miniature collectible models dates back to 1989 when the production enterprise was registered, laying the foundation for the future empire of tabletop games and collectible miniatures.

The initial products were historical military miniatures, which gained significant popularity. It turned out that the target audience was chosen wisely. In our country, there were numerous collectors interested in purchasing precise miniature models of Soviet military vehicles but could only access expensive imported goods. The initial sets of "Red Army Infantry" soldiers and later models of planes, tanks, and ships started selling actively.

The next significant step was taken in 1993 when there was a period of massive privatization, and Konstantin Krivenko managed to win an investment competition, allowing him to gain control over the Lobnya factory producing plastic toys. Since then, the factory transformed from producing dreadful Soviet-era dolls into a vast assortment of collectible models.

Many entrepreneurs would have stopped at this success, but Konstantin Krivenko decided to expand further. A partnership agreement was made with the Italian company "Italeri." The Italians wanted to promote their products in the post-Soviet space and agreed to support the sales of "Star" products in the Western market. Both companies benefited from this collaboration.

Since then, miniature models from "Star" became available to buyers in Western Europe and the USA, receiving high praise from enthusiastic collectors.

Successful Product Range Expansion

The market for miniature models is quite specific; collectors purchase each model only once, which will then stand in their collection for decades. While sales can be increased for a while by exploring new territories and creating new vehicle and soldier models, this process cannot be endless. Therefore, "Star" had to consider expanding its product range to broaden the target audience.

The first experiment was conducted in 2007 when the company started producing dolls designed to Barbie standards, which slightly boosted sales. However, it did not significantly alter the sales situation.

The most successful decision was made around the year 2000 when "Star" released the first domestic wargame in a dark fantasy setting. The tabletop game "Ring of Power" became an alternative for fans of tactical board games who previously had to order "Warhammer" sets from abroad. This move allowed the company to tap into a massive target audience. Subsequently, apart from military tabletop games, the company began producing a vast array of themed board games, ranging from "Winnie the Pooh" to "Terminator."

One of the recent successful steps was taken in 2008-2009 when two significant events occurred simultaneously: the company acquired licenses from foreign board game manufacturers. From that moment on, many legendary board games previously available only abroad found their way to our shelves. Additionally, the company's own board games entered the international market.

Secret of Success

Examining the operations of the company "Star" reveals the key factors influencing its commercial success:

  • Passion for the idea. Firstly, the deep immersion of the company's specialists in the topics they work on stands out. All collectible models are meticulously crafted, attracting collectors. For example, miniature aircraft are produced under licenses from: Kamov Design Bureau, MiG Design Bureau, Sukhoi Design Bureau, Tupolev Design Bureau.
  • Competence of the team. Practically all departments in the company have long-serving specialists as the company prefers to nurture and retain highly skilled staff under good working conditions. This ensures the production of high-quality goods and the development of new products and business directions.
  • Full-scale market expansion. The final component of the company "Star's" success is the mastery of the market, observable throughout its operations. Moving from gaining the loyalty of domestic consumers, the company ventured into the international market. When further expansion with the current range became unfeasible, it ventured into new segments of its market until it claimed a leading position.

The success of the company "Star" is replicable by utilizing the same development strategy implemented by Konstantin Krivenko's team. This is not the sole example of how such a successful market expansion algorithm led to staggering success.

A prominent similar case in the global business arena is the story of "PayPal." This company evolved from a dubious startup into a leading electronic payment system.

So, utilize the information from this article for yourself or share it with friends. If you apply the acquired knowledge in practice, your venture is bound to achieve success.
