The Main Challenge for Most Farms

One of the main challenges for most orchards is that it takes a long time to start seeing profits. Initially, the yield will be low, gradually increasing each season with proper care. As a result, in order to compensate for losses, farms plant a large area with fruit trees that they simply cannot maintain during high-yield seasons.

Columnar trees can yield over 140,000 kg per 1 acre of orchard. For experienced growers, this productivity may seem quite good, considering that the first harvest can be obtained as early as the third year after planting. Another advantage for farmers is that columnar trees take up significantly less space while providing good yields. One tree requires only 0.5-1 sq. m of space. Even with a plot size of 10-15 acres, you can plant up to 200 saplings, each of which will yield 6-12 kg of fruits in 3-4 years.

Calculating Profit

Having 200 trees on 10-15 acres, you can harvest 1200-2400 kg of apples per season. Even if you consider an average retail price of $1 per kg, the profitability can be high and easily cover all expenses:

  • Cost of 200 saplings – $1400-1600;
  • Purchase of fertilizers for planting – $150-200;
  • Seasonal fertilizers and tree treatments – $400-500.

Even with these seemingly substantial investments, the first harvest in 3 years will cover all expenses. Subsequently, the yield will increase, requiring less money for tree maintenance. Therefore, the second or third harvest will generate even greater profits, ranging from $1000 to $3000 per season.

The fruits of columnar trees can be used not only as fresh produce but also processed into jams, preserves, juices, sauces, or dried fruits. They can be sold in organic food stores.

Advantages and Features of Columnar Trees

Gardeners worldwide have embraced the use of columnar trees. The most popular types include:

  • Apple;
  • Apricot;
  • Pear;
  • Plum;
  • Peach.

Columnar crops are easy to manage and care for, given that even mature trees grow to a maximum of 2-2.5 meters. A tree requires only 50 sq. cm of space for growth, which is unattainable for traditional crops (mature apple trees may require 10-15 sq. m). Breeders are even working on exotic varieties like gooseberries and jostaberries.

A novice gardener can create a wide range of crops even in limited spaces, with trees starting to bear fruit as early as the third year. A small area can accommodate a large orchard of 100-200 trees, thriving comfortably in such close quarters.

One columnar tree or shrub can recoup planting costs and maintenance expenses in one season, given yields of 10 or even 20 kg per tree.

How to Plant?

The main requirement for saplings is that they must be strong and healthy. Damaged saplings or plants showing signs of disease or genetic damage should not be planted. It is best to choose trees with a well-branched root system. Planting should be done in a sunny, wind-protected area with generous watering. The planting hole should be large enough to prevent root bending or moisture accumulation, and the soil should be gently packed around the tree.
