Bowling Business Opportunities in the United States

Bowling has become a serious competitor to dance floors, movie theaters, and many other forms of entertainment in the United States today. Additionally, a bowling club can generate revenues of $3,000 to $4,000.

Opening a Bowling Club

When launching such an establishment, it is important to develop a business concept that includes location, a business plan, and a project. Various documents need to be prepared, the establishment needs to be officially registered, and ownership certification needs to be obtained. There is no requirement for a license for this type of entertainment venue. Furthermore, a bowling club is not subject to specialized taxation.

Challenges and Considerations

One of the main challenges lies in finding a suitable location since not every space is conducive to hosting a bowling alley. Some spaces may not accommodate bowling lanes, leading some entrepreneurs to incur extra costs due to remodeling.

The key criteria for a location include proximity to residential areas and the absence of competing entertainment venues. Ideally, the club should be situated near a main road or a metro station. It is recommended to have a parking lot for approximately 20 cars near the club to ensure city approval. Equipment manufacturers can assist in designing the club layout with the parking lot, analyzing investments, and assessing future revenues.

Building and Equipment

A building area of at least 1000m2 is desirable for a club housing several bowling lanes, a café, storage space, restrooms for staff and customers, and utility rooms. The club can be located on the upper floors of shopping centers, former cultural centers, movie theaters, or warehouse spaces.

If constructing a new building of 1000m2, the investment may range between $500,000 to $700,000 with a construction timeline of about six months. The construction expenses will be recouped in 18-24 months.

Safety and Regulations

All structures must comply with fire safety regulations, sanitary inspection requirements, and other services' standards. The building should be soundproofed if sharing space with a shopping center or offices. The bowling center must be equipped with ventilation, plumbing, hot and cold water supply, and a separate space for machinery and technical departments.

Staffing and Operation

Essential staff for the club includes a mechanic, whose expertise directly affects the equipment's performance, an administrator, an instructor, a security guard, waiters, bartenders, and chefs. Proper training for the staff is vital, with equipment suppliers often offering training programs.

Additional Revenue Streams

Additional sources of income for the bowling center can include a mini-bar, buffet, and arcade games on-site. In the United States, bowling is considered a sport, and venues typically do not feature bars, kitchens, or arcade games. Visitors come to relax and enjoy the amenities offered.

Financial Aspect

Bowling clubs typically allocate 75% of their profits from bowling and 25% from bar sales. The most lucrative times are Friday evenings and weekends, with some club owners adjusting prices on these days for increased profitability.

With careful planning and consideration of the unique aspects of the American market, opening a bowling club can be a rewarding business venture with the potential for long-term success.
