Based on marketing research data, more and more people are acquiring pets, even if they may not always have the financial means to keep them. They are willing to cut back on their own needs but invest in the best and highest quality products for their pets. Considering these factors, it is highly advisable to consider opening a pet store that will supply a variety of products, and possibly services, for pet lovers.
Store Location
At the initial stage, it is essential to find a convenient location that will match the image of your store and its purpose. If, in the beginning, you can only afford a small space, consider partnering with a specific pet product manufacturer.
If you have the option to rent or purchase a building with a large enough area, you can expand your range and offer customers several brands with different pricing policies — this way, you can target a broad audience. An ideal option would be to rent a space in a popular shopping center or at the entrance of a supermarket. This way, you can attract more customers than with a stand-alone store.
Regarding the store location, remember that every detail plays a significant role: interior and exterior design, counter size, product placement, phone and internet availability, electrical system condition, and much more.
Product Range
First and foremost, focus on essential items: various types of pet food, cat litter, feeding and water dishes, dog accessories (collars, muzzles, leashes), hygiene products (shampoos, oral and ear care products, etc.), pet clothing, carriers, and medications.
You can add various accessories and toys for pets to your store's assortment later on, once you have built a loyal customer base and determined the demand for specific product categories.
It is also advisable to decide whether you plan to include pets themselves in your product list, as they require special care and a different level of staff preparedness. On the other hand, selling pets can attract a large number of potential buyers.
If you are unsure, it is recommended to start with small rodents like guinea pigs and white mice. Additionally, birds like parrots and canaries, aquarium fish, and turtles are popular choices, as they require less time and effort to care for compared to dogs or cats.
Staff Selection
When selecting employees, be careful, as firstly, salespersons should be sociable and create a warm and pleasant atmosphere in the store, and secondly, it is preferable for them to have special education, such as a veterinarian/veterinary assistant/pharmacist.
Advertising
Do not forget about promoting your business — it is better to invest in advertising than to suffer losses due to lack of customers.
