Interesting and unusual toys often serve as the foundation for successful business ideas. And in cases where toys not only captivate children but also adults, their sales figures can skyrocket. The truth of this statement was proven in practice by the creators of the Ukrainian startup, Ugears, which managed to raise $400,000 for the production of wooden toys. Surprisingly, this amount exceeded the initial funding goal by twenty times. What was it about the Ugears team that impressed hundreds of thousands of users on the Kickstarter platform, enticing them to invest in this project? Let's delve into this further.
The Secret to Ugears' Startup Success
In a typical children's playroom, wooden toys are not uncommon, but the creations produced by Ugears are truly unique. Each model resembles a work of art. The toy developers managed to combine several features in their products that had never been used together before:
- Amazing steampunk-inspired design that is simply mind-blowing – each toy is an intricate construction of gears, cogwheels, flywheels, and other moving parts. When set in motion, the toy can evoke genuine admiration even from an adult.
- Puzzle elements – all toys are made up of numerous parts that the buyer assembles themselves. Each piece is precision-cut using laser equipment, ensuring smooth assembly. The mechanism is powered by a simple rubber band, and basic toothpicks are used as axles for wheels and gears. The puzzle elements make the toys much more appealing to customers, as it's more exciting to build an unusual mechanism on your own rather than buy a ready-made model.
- Interactivity – each model not only performs specific actions but also features various moving parts, such as opening hatches and doors, extending supports, and more.
- Infrastructure models – for example, accessories like sleepers, platforms, wagons, etc., can be purchased for the train set.
The end result for Ugears was such successful toys that investors contributed the necessary production funds on the first day of the company's crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter.
The current state of the project evolved after reassessing the core business idea. Initially, the models were too complex and had to be simplified after testing. Additionally, the company's founder, Denis Okhrimenko, initially didn't want to seek investments and planned to create puzzles from pressed cardboard. However, this idea didn't work out – it turned out that the only suitable material was wood, and it needed to be processed using expensive laser equipment. Thus, a crowdfunding campaign was initiated to acquire the necessary machinery.
As you can see, an original business idea can lead its creator to astonishing success – the key is to believe in one's abilities and persist until the desired outcome is achieved.
If you enjoyed this article, share it with your friends; perhaps they too would want to acquire these marvelous toys.
