Many of the planet's resources are limited and non-renewable. Not only is extracting valuable minerals a complex and costly process, but eventually any source will run dry. What took hundreds of thousands of years to form is being rapidly depleted. Decades ago, science fiction writers from various countries wrote about an energy crisis due to dwindling resources. Today, these predictions are coming true: energy resources are becoming increasingly expensive, and efforts to develop alternative sources have yet to fully pay off and wean us off oil, gas, or coal. Forests are disappearing before our eyes, unable to grow back as quickly as they are being cut down.
