The bustling city of Hong Kong in Asia is home to over seven million residents, resulting in a high number of automobiles in need of repair. Unlike in typical countries where broken-down cars are towed to garages or dealerships, in Hong Kong, mechanics come directly to the location of the breakdown to carry out repairs on the spot. These on-call mobile workshops attract a constant stream of customers due to the busy urban lifestyle. While this setup may seem like a unique business model, the reasons behind it go deeper. Discover more about why Hong Kong mechanics operate this way in the following article.
The Unique World of Roadside Auto Shops
In any corner of the planet, land and real estate hold immense value. Finding available land is challenging, especially when looking to purchase some for personal use. Real estate is considered one of the most expensive international assets, with property becoming pricier in densely populated areas. Hong Kong stands out as one of the most expensive and densely populated cities globally. Opening a small shop or workshop in such a city is no easy feat, given the exorbitant costs of even modest commercial spaces. The residents of Hong Kong have adapted to these conditions, finding creative solutions to navigate the challenging real estate landscape.
Renowned American journalist, car enthusiast, and writer David Tracey journeyed to Hong Kong with a mission: to observe and contrast the operation of roadside workshops with those in other countries. His travel experiences were both fascinating and eye-opening.
The photos captured by David highlighted the real estate scarcity issues affecting the city. It's not just a lack of affordable workshop spaces that's the problem; it's the absence of suitable locations to build them. Despite these challenges, the automotive industry thrives in the city, with a heavy reliance on cars causing congested roads, traffic issues, and frequent breakdowns. In a city like Hong Kong, having the skill set of a mechanic is essential for survival in a bustling urban environment.
Working Conditions for Mechanics
However, the working conditions for mechanics are far from ideal, with safety being a major concern. Workshops often lack space, only providing room for storing necessary parts and tools. Cars awaiting repairs are parked on the street and fixed using body supports and lifts. The majority of repair work is manual, heightening the risks involved. In many cases, repairs are conducted right on the sidewalk!
What passes as an "auto shop" in Hong Kong is typically a small space or even a booth that wouldn't even accommodate a tiny store. Watching car repairs being done on the street is an intriguing sight, just as fascinating as observing a person replacing a car's windshield right on the roadside. Resourcefulness, courage, skill, and a desire to earn a living define the ordinary mechanics of Hong Kong. While these mechanics may not exude a professional image by Western standards, many locals trust them with their vehicles. Repairing a car on the street may not seem high-quality from our perspective, but in Hong Kong, it's a norm born out of necessity.
"Normal" Auto Workshops
In Hong Kong, much like in other major cities, there are conventional, large-scale auto workshops that operate similarly to those in Europe or the United States. Unfortunately, many mechanics do not have the opportunity to work in spacious, safe service centers owned by automotive companies. Instead, they must earn a living in less secure conditions by working on the streets.
