Have you ever wondered what a supermarket will look like in ten to twenty years? In this age of digital technologies, everything is rapidly changing. Gadgets are getting smaller while becoming more functional. The advancement of robotics, attempts to create artificial intelligence, successful development of vending machines, and the creation of self-sufficient homes – these and many other new innovations inevitably lead to a transformation of daily life, even affecting the simplest household tasks.
Why Do We Need Automated Supermarkets?
Automation in production processes has long left the factory floor and become an integral part of everyone's life. Think about washing machines, dishwashers, automatic coffee makers, and more. So, why not make the process of shopping for groceries and household items just as simple? The idea of automated supermarkets emerged when someone asked themselves that very question, eventually becoming a reality years later. Today, in European countries and the United States, you can find supermarkets where payment is made through special self-service checkout kiosks without any cashiers. In 2009, the retail company Auchan opened the first such supermarket in Kaluga. The creation of such supermarkets offers several advantages:- The shopping process is faster compared to transactions involving human cashiers.
- These supermarkets can operate 24/7, which is a lifeline for countries where working during nights or holidays is prohibited by law. For instance, in France, even in major cities, grocery stores and bakeries remain closed on Sundays or only open for a few hours.
- Setting up and maintaining such supermarkets costs less for entrepreneurs than paying salaries, with all costs recouped relatively quickly.
- Older individuals, especially the elderly, may struggle to understand how to use these systems. This issue could be addressed by having specialized consultants available to assist when needed. One consultant could manage a significant number of checkout kiosks.
- Some types of automated supermarkets lack proper security measures, necessitating the presence of security guards in such stores.
Vending Machines
The most common type of 24/7 automated store at present is vending machines. They come in various forms, from traditional machines offering coffee and snacks to more advanced ones capable of preparing pizzas. With vending machines selling salads already in existence, it's likely that supermarkets will have vending shelves for products in the future. These machines are user-friendly, but they do have some downsides:- Products have expiry dates, and without being able to check these dates before purchase, there might be instances of buying expired goods. It will be crucial for staff to monitor and remove spoiled items from vending shelves to ensure customers receive fresh products.
- Insufficient vending shelves might lead to queues in some locations.
Shopping with a Card-Reader Basket
An invention that could simplify the shopping process is a basket equipped with a built-in card reader for payment. The concept is that the buyer places items in the basket but cannot remove them without payment. This method allows for queue-free and efficient purchases. However, such stores will require specialized store layouts to prevent customers from leaving with unpaid items.Purchasing through Monitors
Another idea involves placing panels with monitors in supermarkets displaying all available products. Customers can select items, make payments, and retrieve their purchases via a conveyor belt, increasing automation in this supermarket format.Automated Supermarkets – Our Future?
Many science fiction writers envision a future world fully automated, but currently, even the most refined automated processes require human involvement. Could these automated supermarkets eventually replace traditional stores?
