Serious money can be made not only by inventing innovative business ideas. In some cases, to hit the jackpot, it's enough to have luck and know where to find unusual things. Modern treasure hunters no longer search for treasures using ancient maps - to gain wealth, it's sufficient to regularly monitor consignment stores and auctions.
To confirm that hunting for rarities can bring huge profits, a list of ten expensive items successfully purchased for mere pennies can be provided.
10. Painting "Vertical Diamond" by Ilya Bolotovsky. Real value: $34,375
This purchase was made in 2012 by the unemployed artist Beth Fibek. She was in a consignment shop and bought two oil paintings for only $9.99. She had no idea of the valuable acquisition she made until her friend discovered Ilya Bolotovsky's signature on the canvas. It was a truly joyful shock. The painting was exhibited at Sotheby's auction, initially priced at $15-20,000, and eventually sold for $34,375.
9. Jaeger-Lecoultre watch, released in 1959. Real value: $35,000
This purchase was made by Zak Norris - a professional rarity hunter. He acquired it in a consignment store in Phoenix for only $5.99. In this case, the seasoned eye of the professional immediately recognized a true treasure. The watch was resold through an online store for $35,000.
8. Vintage Vince Lombardi sweater. Sold for $43,020
This is a unique case - a sweater worn by the famous coach Vince Lombardi was purchased in a consignment store in Asheville. The buyers, Sean and Ricky Makevoy, recognized this sweater as the one the coach wore on a TV show. They bought the sweater for just $0.58 and later sold it at an auction for $43,020.
7. Antique Chinese bowl. Real value: $75,640 Australian dollars
This treasure was found in an Australian consignment store in 2013. The peculiar bowl cost the rarity hunter only 4 Australian dollars. Specialists at Sotheby's later confirmed it was a cup made in the 17th century from rhinoceros horn. The fortunate treasure hunter managed to sell the rarity for $75,640 Australian dollars.
6. Agent 007 watch. Sold for $160,175
This purchase was made by a lucky Englishman at a large flea market. He bought a Breitling watch, worn by James Bond during the filming of the movie "Thunderball," for just $38. He put his acquisition up for auction at Christie's, where it fetched $160,175.
5. Painting by a Flemish master, painted in 1650. Sold for $190,000
This purchase happened in 2006 when the painting was bought in a consignment store for $3. It was only years later that the buyer's daughter suspected its high value and had it appraised by antique dealers. In 2012, it was sold at a Massachusetts auction for $190,000.
4. Necklace by Alexander Calder. Auction sale - $267,750
This precious find was discovered at a flea market in Philadelphia. The woman who made the purchase wore the necklace for three years without realizing its true value. After visiting the Philadelphia Museum of Art and seeing Alexander Calder's works reminiscent of her purchased necklace, she had its authenticity verified. The necklace was then sold at auction for $267,750.
3. U.S. Declaration of Independence. Value $477,650
The original U.S. Declaration of Independence was bought by Michael Sparks at a small consignment shop in Nashville for just $2.48. Upon examination, the document was found to be an original dated back to 1832. This rarity was sold to an anonymous buyer at an auction in North Carolina for $477,650.
2. Another Declaration of Independence. Sold for $2.4 million
Treasure seekers were lucky twice with the purchase of the Declaration of Independence. In 1991, one of the rarity seekers bought the document in a frame for just $4 at a flea market in Adamstown, Pennsylvania. This particular copy of the legendary document was sold for $2.4 million.
1. Faberge Egg. Value $30 million
This remarkably successful purchase was made by a metal factory worker who paid $14,000 for an elegant golden egg. He initially planned to melt it down and create some jewelry. However, it turned out to be worth no less than $30 million. The precious find quickly changed hands, and the exact purchase amount remains a mystery. Currently, it is known that 50 eggs were created by Karl Faberge, but only 43 of them have been found by collectors. This gives every treasure hunter the opportunity to earn tens of millions.
Of course, the successful purchases described above are very rare, but even on less expensive acquisitions, decent money can be made. This earning method may not be a full-fledged business idea, but hunting for rarities can be a great hobby that periodically brings a pleasant income.
