Startups with minimal financial investment are the most common and popular among aspiring entrepreneurs. One such low-cost idea is pigeon breeding. These birds can provide various benefits and are easy to care for and feed. There are several types of pigeons, and a specific group is chosen depending on the business objectives.
Types of Pigeons and Initial Expenses
To start the business, you will need to purchase several cages, at least a dozen birds, and bird feed. The initial purchase will cost around $2000-2500, when acquiring around two dozen pigeons. It is also necessary to obtain permission for construction, including meeting required sanitary standards. Official documents confirming legality and compliance with established norms will cost around $280-320. It is challenging to determine the exact payback period as profitability and demand will depend on the type of pigeons used. There are three main groups based on purpose:
1. Decorative Pigeons.
This group includes fantail, frillback, Jacobin, and peacock pigeons known for their beautiful plumage and are used for sale.
2. Pigeons raised for food consumption.
This category includes squab, king, and strasser pigeons, considered delicacies in many restaurants. The eggs of these pigeons are valuable, and their meat is considered dietary and beneficial, especially for individuals with hepatitis.
3. Racing Pigeons.
Vienna tumblers, Tumblers, and Racing Homers. These pigeons can stay in flight for extended periods, making them ideal for competitions and exhibitions.
Breeding racing pigeons is less profitable as demand is relatively low, but their feed should match their status. Opt for breeding decorative or food-consumable pigeons. White doves are popular at weddings today, with high demand, and this business is less demanding in terms of certification requirements.
Proper Pigeon Loft Maintenance
While pigeons are considered low-maintenance birds, the setup of the loft plays a crucial role in breeding and the overall well-being of the birds. To ensure pigeons feel comfortable, provide ample space. To save on cage purchases, you can construct an aviary. Use sandy soil on the floor, such as peat or sand. Peat is cheaper, costing around $1.5-2 for 50 liters.
Feeding is crucial in pigeon loft maintenance. An adult pigeon consumes about 50 grams of food per day. The most common feed is grain mix, with barley being a cost-effective option at around $100-150 per ton when bought in bulk. Quality barley retails at about $0.2 per kilogram.
Feeding pigeons raised for consumption requires pea mixes for weight gain and efficient reproduction, albeit at a higher cost of approximately $200 per ton for peas. However, this pigeon category recoups expenses quicker than others.
Provide water or herbal infusions for hydration. Infusions can enhance the meat's flavor, so it's best to understand the effects of specific mixes. Feeding lasts around 10 days, and birds are harvested after 4-5 weeks of feeding.
Wedding Doves
Breeding white doves for weddings is a lucrative business. As these birds cannot stay airborne for long periods, proper training is required for them to return to the owner. To train the birds, purchase young birds, ensuring to select healthy and robust ones. Training is simple, involving releasing the doves after feeding for a set period. Gradually move them away from the loft, building their familiarity with changing surroundings until they can find their way home.
Additional Expenses
During business setup, additional expenses may arise, primarily concerning land. If you lack private land, renting a plot for the pigeon loft construction will cost an additional $70-140. Pigeons themselves range from $20 to $35 depending on the group.
The carcass cost is around $12 per kilogram, and renting doves for weddings is about $7. You can promote your business via the popular social network VKontakte. Effective advertising and collaboration with cafes or bridal salons can help recoup your investment within six months.
