n 1964, the Tokyo Olympics marked a turning point for Feeney’s business. Japan loosened travel restrictions for its citizens, fueling a tourism boom. Feeney capitalized on this by hiring multilingual staff and expanding his product range. He even partnered with travel agencies to include his stores in tour itineraries.
To maximize opportunities, Feeney opened new stores in high-traffic locations like San Francisco, Anchorage, Guam, and Saipan—where he personally financed a new airport to facilitate access!
By 1977, Duty Free Shoppers was generating $12 million in annual profits, which Feeney reinvested in expanding the business, building hotels, and supporting innovative projects. Decades later, the company’s revenue reached billions. Forbes estimated Feeney’s net worth at $1.3 billion, but they underestimated one crucial detail: Chuck was giving it all away.
A Billionaire Without Billions
n 1981, Feeney donated nearly $1 million to Cornell University, his alma mater. The following year, he founded The Atlantic Philanthropies, transferring his entire fortune to the foundation while keeping just $5 million for himself. Based in Bermuda for its favorable tax laws, the foundation funded hospitals, universities, and tech startups.
Feeney’s philanthropy remained a secret until the late 1990s, when he sold Duty Free Shoppers. Declining sales after the Gulf War prompted him to offload the business. During the sale, Feeney’s role in The Atlantic Philanthropies became public knowledge.
His philosophy, “Give while you live,” became his hallmark. Feeney insisted that every cent should be used effectively. Preferring to allocate funds personally rather than leave it to governments, he directed resources to projects with tangible benefits like building schools, hospitals, and research facilities.
