The Art of Book Carving
The art of carving is gaining increasing popularity. Carving is a form of artistic cutting, with vegetables and fruits being the primary materials used for creative expression, although other suitable items are often utilized as well.
Canadian master Guy Laramie introduced a new form of carving base - books. For his creations, the artist uses thick pages bound together, containing outdated information and unfit for regular use. The main themes of his works are mountain ranges and landscapes.
What You Will Need
Supplies needed include books, which are readily available as there is a vast number of printed publications worldwide, many of which are no longer current due to evolving information over time. Unwanted literature is often discarded or recycled. Books can be purchased inexpensively at small markets or online classified ad sites. Reference books and encyclopedias are ideal due to their thickness and higher likelihood of outdated data.
A common sharp knife with a flexible blade can be used for carving, but there are also specialized tools available, such as:
- Thai knife - the primary tool, as its short sharp blade is ideal for creating intricate patterns;
- Channel knife - for making grooves;
- Serrated knife - with a wavy blade;
- Scissors.
You will also need strong, durable glue to bind the books together and paint to finish the composition. Sculpting book art can even be done with a single book where the pages and additional materials for decoration serve as the foundation for the elements.
Why It's Fascinating
This type of activity is a great outlet for creative expression. Sculptures can be sold to private buyers or bookstores, where an original themed composition can become an interesting focal point in a room's interior or a display showcase.
Possible venues for showcasing book sculptures include:
- Online classified ad platforms;
- Handmade craft fairs;
- Art galleries.
Creating book sculptures allows for personal artistic expression and the opportunity to craft complete installations with hidden meaning or conveying a specific idea. Additionally, this art form gives outdated literature a second life beyond its informative value.
Share this information with friends, perhaps it will become someone's new hobby!
