It's not often you find a business as stable as producing and selling sunflower oil. The beauty of this business is that it doesn't require a huge amount of capital to start, raw materials are easily accessible, and the market readily absorbs any amount of oil produced. Moreover, the production process is zero waste: almost all by-products from processing sunflower seeds can be sold. So, the key to success with this business idea lies in well-organized production. With careful planning, sunflower oil production can be just as lucrative as sheep farming or any other agriculture-related business.

What You Need to Start the Business

The first thing you need to arrange is a source of raw materials. You can purchase seeds from farms or grow sunflowers yourself. In the latter case, you will need more significant financial investment to implement this business idea but you will ensure a steady supply of raw materials for production, leading to greater profitability.

The next step is deciding on the target consumers. Sunflower oil is not only used in culinary applications but also in canning, soap making, paint, cosmetics, and the medical industry. Thus, you won't have trouble finding buyers. Even if you saturate the local market, there will always be opportunities to export.

Once you understand the consumer market, you can determine the demand for refined or unrefined oil. Each type of oil production requires different equipment and production processes.

Next, choose a production facility. Ideally, it should be located in an area with good logistics to facilitate the transportation of raw materials and finished products. A nearby warehouse, sized to store the produced oil, is also essential. As a rule of thumb, calculate about 40 square meters per ton of oil produced per shift. Therefore, if you plan to produce 40-50 tons of oil per shift, you will need a warehouse of at least 2,000 square meters.

Securing a suitable warehouse and production space is one of the biggest challenges in this business. Ideally, the production and storage facilities should be on the same site. If such options are not available in the real estate market, then choose locations with optimal transport accessibility.

Equipment Selection

The next crucial step is acquiring production equipment. It's worth noting that modern production lines can produce any type of sunflower oil. However, if you want to enter the business with minimal costs initially, start with a production line that focuses on one type of oil, which will be more cost-effective.

First Processing Stage - Separating Impurities from Seed Mass

To achieve this, specialized separators are used. Each separator costs approximately $1200-$1300 and can clean around one ton of seeds per hour. After separation, the seeds undergo a crushing process, with these machines costing about $3000 and having a similar hourly capacity. Hence, the number of separators and crushing machines should match, aligning with the plant's planned production capacity.

Second Stage - Kernel Processing in Roll Machine

There are various machines available based on the desired output capacity. An 800 kg per hour machine costs around $1400 and works in conjunction with a separator and a crushing machine. A 4200 kg per hour machine costs about $3700 and can operate with multiple seed cleaning lines, enabling medium-scale oil production.

Third Stage - Seed Processing in Roaster for Further treatment

Roasters can be either fire-based (around $3000) or steam-based (around $11,500). Premium steam roasters (about $14,000) enable the production of "cold-pressed" oil, free from the taste and aroma of roasted seeds. This production stage can be skipped by using cold-press technology, but it reduces the oil yield. Thus, a cost-volume trade-off is necessary.

Fourth Stage – Oil Extraction

For this, a screw press is required, ranging from $21,000 to $28,000. An average machine can produce between 15 to 25 tons of oil per shift. To set up a mid-range plant, several presses of this kind are needed.

Fifth Stage – Filtration

The settled oil is cooled, allowed to stand, and then passed through a special filter, costing around $3000. Often, 2-3 similar filters are installed at a single facility.

At this stage, you obtain "crude oil" and seed cake, which holds value in agriculture. You can start selling the produced items at this point. Subsequently, the seed cake can be processed in an extractor to extract all the oil, requiring additional equipment for refinement.

Final Stage – Oil Packaging

For this, a packaging line is needed, the cost of which depends on the type of packaging and your production capacity.

With well-organized production processes, you will have a continuous flow of products with steady demand. This enables consistent sales and a rapid return on your business investment. All these factors make sunflower oil production one of the most lucrative sectors in agriculture.
